Ha ha, well, I suppose I should add a little something to the pot here, but Kyan summed things up nicely. Yeah, our real mistake was picking leader first. TT even pointed out that the chances of anyone picking Pericles was pretty low.
But, hey, that's what makes this an adventure, am I right? I'd be far too boring if we were actually able to match our Leader traits to a civ, heh heh.
I have a little more experience with Specialist economies, although you usually don't want to fully rely on them, so we'll get to plant some of Kyan's beloved cottages. Early on, I see us building our cheap Libraries in order to run plenty of Scientists. Unless we're drowning in food, we'll probably avoid a foray into Caste System, although I am somewhat fond of that civic.
But, yes, Babylon was the best of some bad choices. Russia was TT's top pick, but I voted that down because 1) the UB comes too late to be useful, and 2) Cossacks are nice, but not the best UU in my opinion. I bought more into Kyan's reasoning that Bowmen might, at least, help us survive long enough to build some Libraries! At least we may succeed in our secret strategy: Pick a Leader and Civ that will confuse our opponents into submission!
TT's worksheet is very nice. I hope to comment on each team myself, but I'll probably have to break that into several posts. And no, that's not just to increase post count.
Something I would like to point out is that I don't think that we're the only team that got a little screwed. Morgan picked Elizabeth, easily one of the most popular leaders, but ended up having to choose between Mongolia and France (ironically enough). I personally think that France was the better choice, but not by much.
So, a few thoughts before I have to go:
*Mr. Nice Guy + Shoot the Moon: Pacal II of Carthage. A reasonably strong leader in his own right, plus Carthage which can be pretty powerful in the right situations. TT mentioned lots of water and/or Horses available. The Numidian Cavalry is a pretty powerful unit (Horse Archer that's essentially immune to Spearmen, with +50% vs. Melee units), and the Cothon adds trade routes to the city it is built in. The presence of rivers will also empower the Financial trait.
I think that this can be a dangerous combination depending on the layout. Worst-case, they can use their Expansive trait to help rapidly improve their cities, Financial to fund their empire, and send out waves of Numidian Cavalry to conquer their neighbors. If we started near them, I'd want to try and choke off their expansion, and do everything possible to keep Horses out of their hands. We wouldn't really have a good counter to those, aside from Spearmen. Of course, little water and no Horses would ruin their day.
*Dantski + Mukha: Willem van Oranje of Portugal. As TT said, lots of water is good for their Civ, otherwise, they'll have to rely on their Leader, which isn't a pushover. I would like to point out that I believe that the players voted for some amount of water on the map, so they may find a use for the Civ (like Carthage, too). Traits aren't geared for war, so I wouldn't expect high aggression from them, but I'm hoping not to start next to other Creative leaders.
Speaking of, there are 4 other Creative leaders. For some reason, I expect to start near at least one of them. In either case, I hope we can do some early expansion, plant our flag, and grab some territory.
I'll talk about more of the teams later.
Hopefully this will be an entertaining show for the lurkers. Oh, that reminds me, should we divide up any duties? For example, should we have one "face" for our team, diplomatically? One turn player? Me? Clearly, I'm the brains behind this outfit.
