The day got off to a disgruntled start.
"No deaths again?!" exclaimed one man, despondent.
"I was promised a bloodbath!" cried another.
Early in the day, an angel descended from above. "Look guys, I didn't mean for this to be a full-time job either. If you want to speed things up just let me know, and I'll talk to the Big Guy about reducing the hours in a day, just for you."
Several people sneered. "This only proves the game mas- I mean, God's malign intent!" screamed someone from a rooftop. "The proof is all around us! Behold yonder troll-shaped bell, which was definitely not intended solely as a bad pun!"
The murmur of discontent grew into a low, steady rumble.
A man with wild eyes pushed his way to the front of the crowd. "The secret is peace!" he hissed. "Let us all sing Kumbaya, and drag things out even further! Surely that will free us of our burdens!".
In the end though bloodlust won out, as it almost inevitably does, and a group turned on the quiet, dignified man who had introduced himself only as "novice". So furious was the release of their pent-up frustration that they didn't even bother stringing him up, and instead simply impaled him on the spot with a particularly jagged branch that just happened to be laying nearby.
Novice staggered back in shock, black blood oozing down his mouth- a mouth which now revealed two curiously long and sharp teeth.
