Am enjoying pillars too, have 2 games going together, one a normal run through and one a solo game. As well as the challenge I just prefer the simplified inventory and equipment management handling 1 guy

This is my entire childhood in a bundle.

Have you ever participated in Jedi Outcast/Academy mass MP lightsaber battles? If not you don't know what you've missed.

Played the SP a few years ago but never tried the MP, since I kinda assumed there wouldn't be anyone playing that long after release. Also while the game was fun to play I was never a big fan of lightsaber combat in the Jedi Knight series since it felt like you just pick the slow high damage swings for fights vs lightsaber users and run in and out. Unfortunately I don't have a copy anymore so can't see if I'm wrong for myself.

About a month ago I was playing in some lightsaber MP. Academy and outcast are still both played online! Use gameranger to find MP games.

Pillars is terrific.

Yeah...

I was having a fun time with my fighter, beating up the tutorial and wolves. And then I hit that Tarnesh guy. Me and Ineffectual Rogue Girl took like 20 tries to get past him...

When you're level 1 you are really close to powerless. Especially with BG1 it happens a lot where you struggle through the beginning until you reach a point where you don't die right away.

Go get Kivan!

A stat-optimized fighter is def. the way to go if you want a more tolerable time of things. Bows are crazy strong in BG1; switch to pretty much any melee weapon(s) with an upper attack range of 8 or more for BG2, if you import your character. Both games throw you a lot of excellent mage-type followers, but most of the fighters are either meh or will abandon you if you aren't prone to random acts of senseless violence, especially in BG2. Thieves can also get crazy strong, but only in BG2, at which point fights are just about as good anyway. Plus loot genrally just means more to fighters, which makes exploration more rewarding.

Rangers, Paladins, etc. are just worse flavor fighters. Clerics are quite good though, but your damage potential will be low for a while. Gnomes make for fantastic fighters- lots of good resistances / saving throws, and they don't suffer penalties to a main combat stat like dwarves or halflings do.

I'm just a human fighter with high physical stats, 2 star proficiency in battle axes, and a battle axe. once i get used to the gameplay system i might restart to have a less 'baseline' character, but we'll see.

It's not super crucial for BG1. Ineffectual Rogue Girl could probably beat the game without you. wink The thing about Baldur's Gate, as you've seen, you get really sudden spikes in difficulty when facing certain encounters. Usually you should be able to get past those encounters on second or third try, by using the pause feature to get all of your friends contributing to the battle in an intelligent way. Of course Tarnesh would have been easier if you had brought along those two shady looking travelers you met earlier, but that's a choice we all have to make.

Wait, what two shady looking travelers? I've only met a creepy wizard dude since I got full control.

Guess I need to go do more 'sploring around the way to the inn...
