Guess I need to go do more 'sploring around the way to the inn...

Couple guys right on the road that runs east from Candlekeep, before it forks to go the Inn. You probably wandered off the road far enough to miss them.

or of course you go kensia/mage and just walk the game. but yes its worth on the first playthrough getting those 2 guys, just remember you can go off route in that game to get random side quests and team mates (like kivan for a few levels till bows suck)

I haven't played a lot of it. I got it in the D&D bundle thingy a year ago with stuff like planescape torment (which is horrid to play now). I found the game frustrating to play and didn't get more than 3-4 hours in before stopping. Melee characters seem too fragile and some fights it seems like all you can do is endlessly kite with your ranged party members which got tiring very quickly (kinda like Diablo 3 on higher difficulties).

Since you're a human fighter dual-class may be the way to go. Fighter-thief and fighter-mage are both great. Backstabbing with levels in fighter is just stupid fun when you get high enough level. The best is when you take a full fighter at lvl 9 and then dual them to thief or mage BG2. As Jkaen said Kensai-dual class mage is just crazy. I would just run around maps solo with him, people exploding left and right. Tenser's transformation lol

Beamdog has also made quite working enhanced version of BG (uses bg2 engine, classes etc.)
