Variant tournament: no 2s.

How about applying some good old RB variants to hearthstone? The one I've got in mind is simple: Your decks can't contain any cards with mana cost of 2. Anyone interested? If there are at least a few people on NA or EU, we could do a simple round robin tournament. 8+ people on the same server and we switch to something that scales better.

I'm in on NA.

(Why no 2s? Because it totally changes the metagame. Aggro decks get slower, but a bunch of key cards in other decks go away too: Blade Flurry, Wild Growth, Sunfury Protector, Fiery War Axe... so everyone has to figure out what the good decks are from scratch, and then you figure out a deck that's good against those decks. )

What are everyone's thoughts on the format? Conquest, Last Deck Standing, or something else? Conquest might be the better of the two, but there are still issues with it...

Oh, and there's a variant tournament for the professional scene this weekend: Challengestone. Might be worth checking out. Let's hope they don't steal our variant!

I don't think conquest is a very good format personally. It has weird incentives. I think any of these would be appropriate:

1) Bring 3 decks and play bo5. For each game, just pick any of your decks. You can pick each once or the same 3 times or whatever.

2) Last hero standing.

3) (Only because it's a weird format) Bring 1 deck and play bo3 (or bo5).

I'd prefer a format not #3 because it feels like the most fun thing about this weird format is deckbuilding, so I'd wanna see multiple decks from people.

I wish more tournaments went with a design like #3 actually. You might see decks that try to be well rounded instead of doing just one thing really well.

* Round robin (everyone plays everyone else)
* Last hero standing BO5 for each match. (Bring 3 decks of different classes. Announce classes simultaneously at the start of the match. Pick any deck to start. Losing deck is eliminated, winning deck must be chosen again. Win by eliminating all 3 enemy decks.)
* You can't include 2-cost cards in your deck. (You're allowed to get them from e.g. Webspinner, and you can play cards that have had their costs changed to 2. You just can't include any 2s in your list.) If you realize during a match that your deck has illegal cards, let your opponent know and that deck is eliminated. (If that deck was mid-game, concede the game.)

Do you guys care about having a single winner? It's possible that e.g. 3 people go 2-1 in a loop while the 4th goes 0-3, and then there's no easy way to resolve it. My preferred resolution is to just accept that there might not be a single best record at the end of the tournament.
