[PB25 Spoiler] General Flauros leads the Creole Calabim

I was pissed off, and I wanted the thing that was pissing me off removed. You can't tell me if a comment is or is not offensive, because my perception is not the same as yours. Whether or not the comment is still pissing me off isnt the question, the question is whether it was pissing me off at the moment, and it was, so I would prefer for people to at least *try* to not piss me off in a thread that I use regularly. Thanks.

Ok ... lets not go farther off topic ....

I'll log in in the morning, see what Elkad has done, and go from there.

Okay, I'll just say something quickly about this forums modding protocols. I don't have a side here, I just saw some mention of it in the lurker thread and had a look-see.

As far as I'm aware, this forum has never actually changed or removed a post or user for offensive behavior, or anything other than being a spam bot or actively breaking the rules of a game (and that bit I'm pretty sure only happened for the first time this year). That's in the face of some pretty bad behavior in some cases, including a user who spent post after post attacking any number of fellow members (myself included). So it's pretty unlikely that you'd get any post removed, no matter how offensive - and it seems debatable whether or not that is deserved.

And honestly, I like it like this. It's a pretty good record of non-intervention we have here, and there's not really any behavior I think should be curtailed on this forum. We've got a good thing going, and it'd be nice to keep it that way.

Anyway, back to the topic.

Good points Q,

Its always good to have core protections against censorship, b/c probably everything would be censored if anyone with a knee-jerk reaction to X were given censorship priviledges ...

If i recall correctly, Thomas Jefferson once said that We'd all be dead if Will and Capability were always joined, and I think that this parallels with the calls for censorship quite nicely.

Historically, psuedo-Confucian social values (ie Social Roles/ Relationships/ Shaming/ Saving Face) have led to a high saturation of Restraint and Self-Censorship. And too often in our modern anonymous society we see Forum after Forum resorting to Bans, Mod-deleted comments, censorship etc ... so I'm glad to hear that, at Realms Beyond at least, we see a bastion of Censorship-free dialogue among peers.

As an administrator (and I feel confident the others would agree) my policy is to be as slow as possible to do things like deleting posts or banning users. Disagreement isn't a bad thing at face value, and it isn't my job here to clamp down on it even if people get angry.

The only circumstances where I would, would be either someone who has a long history of aggressively and only harassing people, with no other contributions or hope for reconciliation; or if a member started posting other people's personal information without consent with intent to harm. Luckily that's not criteria that we really have to worry about much on here.

I think I've edited a few posts containing accidental personal information that did not seem to be intentionally posted. I've only locked one thread, for a while, but that hardly had to stop the toxic discussion at the time. Seems no one was interested enough in continuing to start a new thread at the time. And there was once a case where I was genuinely interested enough in banning an actual user for some unsavory horse shit behavior that I talked it over with management (wink) in the admin forum to get a broader opinion. We didn't ban the user that case, either. Like Brick said, you really have to make quite an ass of yourself to get moderated, which is good because it's nice to think that we're mostly all capable of behaving like decent enough people most of the time.

Spambots, though, lol (And I don't mean of the Krill variety!). That reminds me, I haven't checked the user ban page in a while, I wonder if Bob has had any fun with killing advertising accounts lately.

Treaty with Commodore ends next turn ... things might get a bit ... INTERESTING smile

(also ... Donovan FINALLY accepted open borders ... )

Alrighty then, I I'm basically offering up Alexandria and Thebes (the southern half of the island) for about 700-800 gold, give or take, depending on cirumstance, etc ... probably more gold than that if its say, 5-10 turns from now, but assuming the cities sell next turn, I think 700-800 gold is fair.

Also, Commodore has lots of galleys about. Hard to say whether he wants to invade the island, or if he is just trying to psyche me out (always a possibility) or if maybe he wants to go naval against HAK, or whomever. Maybe even he wants to launch a naval invasion against Elkad, in addition to his land invasion, but I am doubtful of this. As it would just be vs. the Capital.

A turn or two ago, I missed a chance to RAZE Elkad's capital, and instead chose to RAZE Maastricht with 0 losses. Of course ... I didn't freakin NOTICE that I had missed such an opportunity until all forces were aligned against Maastricht ... so definitely a learning opportunity. Don't be so gung ho about OPTION (1) that you never even look for an OPTION (2)

Sadly Elkad had rectified his mistake the following turn, so no more Blaze-of-Glory gambits.

Elkad sent (half?) of his army or more to raze Fort Washington and succeeded. Then I killed his army (and his Medic 3 Great General)

Soooo .... that was kinda fun .... (sort of)

So here is what I offered HAK this turn. Now, normally I would consider this to be an 'empty deal' as in, one that he would NEVER choose to accept.

However ... a few things happened this turn.

#1. Commodore's galley stack was on the island this turn ... or more appropriately, there were 5 commodore galleys in the waters that I could see.

A stack of 1 Caravel + 3 galleys were on the coast of Battle Island, and 2 Galleys were on the C-man's coast.

I declared war on Commodore, killed 1 Caravel + 2 Galleys. I then deleted the badly weakened caravel to eliminate potential Experience points. (I otherwise lost nothing in the fighting)

Commodore has two ways of getting to me.

South-of-Island
---> Currently COMPLETELY under occupation by HAK. And I was able to get good 'Getting Galleons' moneh for my troubles.

To be fair, even had I not done this, Commodore would still have had to pass through HAK culture to go by this route. Currently the two do not have an Open Borders agreement.

Without the southern majority of the Island, however, the land that I was at first completely going to abandon, is now at least defendable. And, with any luck, I won't have to fight any major Land-battles on this Island, as my predecessors had to do. Furthermore, if Commodore went all-in and took the northern half of the island, he would have to contend with an HAK presence, and would not be able to 'dominate the seas'.

I will, of course, still place a Caravel in the heart of HAK's coastal region between his mainland and the island. I'm not stupid, and I would hate to get a surprise attack by Commodore through this Channel, with no warning whatsoever.

This brings me to the 'North Half' of the Island.

I'm actively working to make this part of the Island defensible, and with any luck, it could be used to stage operations against Commodore's Mainland.

---> I don't doubt that HAK will likely defend the offer before seeing the in-game situation, however I will hope that he understands my message of military cooperation.

I have hope that he at least freely offers the extra resources he has (as some of those resources I *would* have had, if the cities were kept) ... and that he offers as much gold as he thinks a potential war ally would be worth.

Of course I was pissed when the Knight + Longbow I had whipped in Alexandria/Thebes didn't get a chance to complete, as I specifically said 158*** gold, when the turn was clearly 157, but eh, at least the issue is over and done with. And what I gained from the deal is arguably about 5 times better than what I lost

(Increased defense, a bit of gold (read CONSIDERABLY faster Galleons) and the resulting higher likelihood of my nation's continued relevance)

EDIT: I only offered this deal WHILE at war with Commodore, because otherwise it could be seen, imho, as a threat.

I have to say, I almost sent a 'Confused, Grumpy, Rolling Eyes' random sort of 'non-trade' .... just to express mahself.

I mean seriously, I'm a bit dissapointed in HAK.

But whatever .... even if HAK turns on 'full loser' mode, I haven't exactly lost my sense of adventure. I think we could still do AMAZING things in this game.... but idk how much time i'm gonna put into it in the future. I think I'll try to just put in an hour at 6 pm each day ... although lately the days I planned to do that I was just a 'tad' late .... but since I'm second half of Commodore's turn, and since Elkad has basically signed out (he should really switch to AI imho, an AI might give Commodore a hard time :P) ... or even a peace deal! Not that Elkad's civ matters all that much.

I did have a chance to raze his capital earlier, as I've already explained .... now that might have been a bit more fun (for the future of the game) but .... whatever. I mean, I think i'll have fun with Galleons regardless.

I wonder if (in a few turns) I can 'buy' peace from Commodore? smile

I mean hell .... I don't think I'd do that unless HAK decides to stop paying for my Mercenary Services ... but in a Vacuum, why NOT go for the highest bidder? Sure if Commodore offers a prize enough deal, I'll probably take it ....

BUT!!! At the same time, I won't betray HAK until/ unless they decide to cancel/ betray me first.

I see no reason to peace with Commodore exactly UNTIL I've got my money though .... (I mean, from Commodore). I mean, short of a huge dogpile by Non-Commodore players, I see no reason to not go after the top dog. (or rather, why go for an empty peace when NO ONE ELSE is at all worth attacking?)

The way I see it, my only chance at victory is to ruin the #1 guy's day. (at least, unless he is paying me ... hmmmm)
