Hah, true enough. Needs a little more tech thread abuse/weeping, but otherwise, fair dinkum.
Hookee. HAK is continuing to utterly ruin his economy by mass-drafting 1xp maces, but that's actually a bit dangerous. We've only got a couple dozen catapults and a couple dozen crossbows; if he cared to throw a middling-size hundred unit stack at us we'd lose some nice cities before wiping it out. So of course we are grateful for the boldness of Carthage in holding down troops “over there” so we can continue our economic dominance. I began hungering (but not starving) Cascade Point for a great merchant to go cash bomb in orange lands. Caravels are up to a baker's dozen and protective muskets are being built everywhere; we're going to attempt to just weather the coming storm. And then reply to it with cannonballs. Why are we the only empire with a decent-size capital?

Can we just take a moment to talk about what a wonderful two-edged sword Mindy has been? He's obviously over all been great for HAK; the team is a true synthesis that is greater than the sum of its parts, obviously they are second place here for a reason. But I'm also seeing some un-HAK-like general strategic weed. Exhibit A (and B, and C, and D...) is poor, sad, war-torn Turkey. HAK is wrecking his empire with whips/drafts, as you can see with the pathetic sizes his cities are down to. He's also using a big chunk of his power (no idea how much, but looks like about half his total soldier points judging by retained garrisons in nearby cities) to fight Gavagai to a near-standstill...all for three little nubbin-cities. This feels like Mindy-stubbornness to me, coupled with Mindy's blithe assurance in the ability of technologically superior forces to win. We'd be able to thwart a big waddle-hit now, with our tripled catapult count and shiny new CG3 muskets, but we're not exactly capable of offensive conquest yet, while HAK need but stretch out his hand and the Isle of Contention could be his; particularly now with him landing Optics. And we were vulnerable half a dozen turns ago. So thanks, Mindy. Go go Gavagai!
On the subject of caravels; we're building more and more; Tasunke spent a turn of EP on us and so delayed Astronomy, but we are going to be expecting galleons from that quarter soon. HAK in the eastern sea will also mass-upgrade his half-dozen triremes, so need reinforcement there. We're also going to position two caravels thusly; three turns after our great merchant gets born, he's going to be completing a trade mission across the world in sunny Carthage. Money which will be funelled into Phi universities all over the empire.
Philosophical hurts to use, but it is darned useful nonetheless. Here's where our next golden age gets extracted; Deadman's Switch is going to risk about 20% odds on a GM or GSci repeat to slam out the 900 GP. It's always a little depressing to starve out on artists, but once the big kick begins we'll have our great person in five hungry turns. So very many lost hammers.

Which part of f9, pray tell? Graphs aren't particularly instructive, as I only have Retep/Tasunke/HAK. Top cities are basically what Dtay posted a bit ago, with maybe Angkor Wat (har) added to Holy Rome? Anyway, the meat is as always the demo screen, here:
It is astonishing how hard HAK is hurting himself with drafts and whips (and after this shot, HAK played and drafted thrice more). We're top GNP with tech turned on and we've still yet to finish our universities, crop yield difference is just horrific, and holy crap that MFG imbalance. Tasunke still has yet to complete Astronomy too, weirdly enough. Bah! Who even knows what transpires in Cuckooland.
Companionably, here is f8. Seven players, and we have a full quarter of the world's citizens. Land area is also kind of sad; HAK has the same number of cities, but his curious decision to pair mercantilism with slavery means he's not been running artists much. His smaller cities are also more densely packed; if we we going at it mano a mano I'd feel pretty chill. Mano a mano y nusto...it's still interesting. Salmon Falls is a great city, though.

While HAK is growing his military at about four maces per turn, we're much more gently approaching our build-up. Well, on land anyway...those crossbows are all 5xp and stacked within castles, so we can scoff all we like at the mace/landsknect swarms. I figure sooner or later HAK will get himself Guilds for knights-he's actually close to being able to steal it from us-and that will require better defenders than a handful of pikes but protective muskets fit the bill. Obviously, what we are taking very seriously is the threat of galleons; caravels can thwart them but not frigates so that's kind of our drop-dead date for either snagging Astronomy or reaching Steam Power/Steel. Ovbiously, ironclads would be preferred. Tasunke ain't nearly as fast a researcher as I thought he'd be.
I realize it's been a while since I've posted a picture of northern Inca; we're growing our new acquisitions very handily while the established cities labor to get us to a fleet of thirty caravels or so. I think we also need to toss over another half a dozen catapults to finish off Amsterdam on our terms; got to ensure our defensive depth remains deep. Caste artists are securing this all nicely once the Dutch culture is gone, next turn Cordon and Lynx both pop to 3rd ring. Windmills to grow on in fair Odd Girl Out; she'll work plains workshops for most of her hammers.

This might well be the end for poor Elkad; that's a six-unit Indian penny-packet there. Donovan, now, I'd fully expect to try to keep Amsterdam. Which is fine as it is, I guess, but that basically would mean Tasunke gets himself a free ingress point. So rouse the knights and ready the huntsmen, if Donovan screws the pooch we want to swoop in and burn the city for him. Tasunke has Astronomy now, so that's an open invite for galleons right there. I think I see hints about how Donovan keeps losing stacks.

Finally! Now the naval game gets interesting. The 5-pack of caravels I sent scouting over here already earned their keep; a second galley got deleted to prevent me from gaining XP. Wasn't enough, and now the good admiral will be heading down to the heroic epic site for cookies. I fully expect Tas has make galleons/caravels in range than are here shown, of course, so these guys are probably toast. You did good, boys, keep attriting. Tasunke has SO MANY THEMES, none of them cohere.
I haven't shown our southern core in a while; it's blossomed into something very nice. I'd call it under-grown but that's really just the western Sugar Cities being mega-crushed by Holy Roman culture; the spices are 50/49 for HAK now and falling so in a couple turns that's another 2/1/3 tile for whatever that's worth. We're pumping out a merry crapton of muskets and catapults down here, all making for a pretty sure area against Dumb Drafted Maces (DDMs). Knights would be more costly, but even so...I think the forces we're building up now are actually going to be destined to roll out on more of an offensive path. Great Merchant is born end of this turn, his path blazed through here is pressaged in yonder signposts. Retep is still the best troll ever.

Researching Gunpowder, as you can see!
He's OB'd us, and running unit-scans show wherever he's building up, it ain't towards us. I think he's planning on operations in the other Battle Isle, actually...he's also following a turn split with Donovan and/or Gavagai. Dtay and I spoke about it at length...we're right now leaning on "watchfully trust" towards Retep.
