People invest a lot of time making plans for their Civ empires, writing reports, physically playing the turns. It's only natural that you would care much more about this game than something like a Smash Brothers tournament, which I imagine would be over in a few hours, tops. Plus when you play a game of Civ, you're building something. Sure, it's only a virtual nation which has no practical application in the real world, but getting eliminated is sort of like having your younger sibling accidentally save over your prized Pokemon team (I'm possibly speaking from experience here :P )

Yeah, I agree with you guys. The DotA and pokemon are examples are very pertinent too. Interesting thing, when I'm writing, I often feel that the best way to explain a certain sensation is to compare it to a game, like the feeling of someone saving over your prized pokemon collection, as Bob said. It's very funny when you think about it. Yesterday writers said: "this is like climbing a mountain in the morning, when the humidity of the air hasn't been consumed by people and their problems"; today writers say: "this is like getting a rampage with a perfectly timed and placed witch doctor ulti".
Oh, Civ right? Well, Molach GNP with (what I assume is 100% gold) is 139 gpt. Holy heck! And he was building for war! Mine is 142 at full gold (IIRC), and I have like 1 warrior per city (no, it's not that bad). That's really annoying, because I won't have a technological edge against that economy... Man, these neighbours of mine... Of course, if I take Molach land, I'd be in a very good position. But that's a huuuge if. I have no idea about how I could make an attack. I'm lost!! How many knights do I need? What do I do!? Damn! On the bright side, my Capital will be fielding a pretty nice (is it?) 2 knights every 3 turns, with a bit of overflow. On the dark side, the rest of my empire sucks at hammer production and I have no idea about how I can solve that. Again, this is the time where I start wanting to go for Liberalism instead of guilds, Lib economy, get the Great Merchant and then welcome dtay's military with open arms, with still the same warrior per city on defense. As game metaphors go, how about: "the feeling of opening civstats and realizing that your civ is not in the same place as before; that it wasn't your opponents' score that increased, but your score dropped 200 points; that your "sheep for sheep trade" neighbours actually attacked you and took 5 cities in a single turn; and then having to wait 3 hours more on work, with your stomach turned and not caring at all about all the damned reports in front of you, until you can see how the hell they did that, because even you, as the owner of the civ, can figure it out". Or "you connect to the game and actually look at it for like 5 minutes before realizing your neighbour attacked you and you actually lost a city". Both happened to me in PB games... And for some reason, I kind of consider going for them again (that's the Liberalism plan, by the way)... But the plan goes on! My first GP will come soon, which means our GA will come soon. I wonder what GPs I could produce during this GA to help with the conquest... A merchant, to upgrade HAs into knights? Perhaps. But the way things are going, I'm not sure I'll have produced that many units before I reach guilds... And those could be cats and phants, which would be used in the war without needing upgrades... I don't know. I feel I have too many questions and very few answers. I think I need a teammate to help me decide in a course of action and help with seeing different ideas. Lacking one, I should focus on just doing the best I can, and keeping things simple.
The first thing I do when I log in to play a pitboss turn is read the event log to "read the news". Then, usually, the next thing I do is scan the scoreboard looking for red letters that weren't there before. That combination usually suffices to make sure I'm not moving pieces around without noticing a new state of war.
On sheep for sheep trades: Live with the assumption that both you and your neighbor(s) are compulsive liars and you'll never be surprised when their sheep is actually a wolf. Even better, be the sheep to teach that lesson to your neighbor. After checking the game today I realized one thing and only one thing, Ichabod sucks the people are asking to remove him from power through an Impeachment
Seriously man just take a deep breath, not need to worried about what is happening in other parts of the world nor in winning just have fun and let things be. Now I told you how I see things: the only option to keep competitive is attack someone, going for a peaceful economic approach won't work. Who to attack? The options are Molach and Dtay, I will choose Molach if noly because in the case Dtay decided to attack us defending that border will be easier than defending the Molach border. Not to mention Molach has already been in conflict with AT wich hopefully could start a dogpile. How to attack? Is probably to late for HA/swords attack anymore, for a succefull HA attack we should have started 14 turns earlier by the time we make and move the units there are going to be obsolete. So we need knights and we need a way to make then fast. First how long will take to get to guilds? We need Monarchy, Feudalism, Machinery, Guilds. I'm asumming 17T if you start the GA 12-13T from now. Building wealth here and there could make shave 1-2T maybe. Sen Fortress, Anor londo, The Depths, Duke's archives and the capital can make knights in a reasonable time, you should stop making cottages for that cities and make workshops. We are going to need around 128 workers turns just to make road/workshops/farm. That is around 11 turns. We especially need roads. The capital can make a couple more workers after finishing the forge, just give it one more mine and use the unimproved forest for now to make 2T workers. Depending of how things looks we'll need at least 20-30 knights plus some defenders to attack someone. I have take pictures of everything so tomorrow I can make more precise comments if you don't mind me showing how things are looking

retep, can you assume turn playing duties? I agree with most of what you say, but I can't really do it. And I'm not having that much fun playing the turns either.
Retep, I know you read opened the PM I sent you. Do you have a reply?

So, I got a Great Artist as our GP, but I can't bulb music. He'll bulb drama instead. I could have sworn that I checked this before...
No matter, as the plan was for a GA. We are pretty close to guilds, I have to say. But I'm still at a lost about how to approach this attack. I'm considering a knight stack through one of the borders I have with Molach, where I want a faster conquest, and a slower stack with catapults and swords through the most isolated part of his empire. If I can manage to take his Capital before we stalemate for the first time, I think we are set for a full conquest in the long run. Molach's production is pretty low, I think he's just spamming cottages everywhere, while we are almost finished with all the expensive forges in the cities we want them. Another advantage is that Molach's cities near me are almost all on flatland. So, the best defensive unit I think he can have by then (longbow) won't be so bad for me. He has all the creative culture, which is annoying, but hills are far worse. I hope he can't get to pikes (he probably can, but I don't think he will), so my knights stay dominant in the battlefield. Actually, if I can take out Molach without letting dtay take cities from him, perhaps I'll be in a decent spot in this game. Molach's land is well developed and it gives me an opening to Adrien's land. Adrien has a lot of land (really), but I thing he's in bad shape considering tech and the fact that he's wasting resources on a defensive war against AT. We'll see. |
