Hey, wait, isn't that what the mapmaker is for?

Kinda depressing to see both Jowy's border and ours on the same screen at the same time. After Pottery, AH or Sailing? Or am I forgetting something? I lean AH, we have the worker labor now for deer and I feel an itch to have horses now.

I think the next techs on the list are sailing AH masonry writing and maths, but I could see us go AH sailing instead. Sailing was also to get trade routes to BB because I didn't expect to have so many workers on hand, but now that we do AH is probably better.

The main value I see for Sailing at the moment is the Whales. But no city is at its happy cap, and Whales isn't a super awesome tile on its own, so it can wait a little bit.

I do see the trade route point, both sides.

Do you have a particular reason in mind for Math? If it's for the Mids...we don't have that many forests left, honestly. If it's simply en route to currency, I admit currency is always handy. I'd be tempted to try to pick up a religion if there are any easy ones unclaimed, myself. Seems like happiness is going to be a bit of an issue this game, and an extra source of culture is always handy too. If we get OrgRel, that'll help a mids run just as much as Mathematics would.

Oh yes of course, the whales are good. I'll decide next turn on AH vs sailing. We still have some time before religion vs maths becomes relevant

I'm waffling here. So I'll list some pros and cons.

Religion (if available):
Pro:
Reliable culture, that can be produced in core cities and exported. Culture is vital on the Jowy border, wherever it lands.
Happiness (eventually). One easy from state religion, option for temple.
Option for shrine could mean bonus cash
Religious civics - OrgRel to help get early infra (and wonder) up, later can go for XP.
Option for Great Prophets...eventually we really want to have mixed GP for golden ages.

Con:
Don't have any spare hammers for missionaries just yet. Would rather push REX enough to grab those furs than spend hammers on happiness. Especially on a map this lush
May not be available easily. Even if it is (Judaism?), delays Currency/Code of Laws/Iron Working, all of which are pretty important too.

Mathematics:
Boosts chops. We like to chop.
En route to other good stuff. Currency, CoL (UB!), Calendar, etc. and so on.

Con:
Um...just not getting the alternatives, I think.

Overall? It seems to me that both are long term questions. Most of the Religion benefits can't be used right away. But then most of the benefits in going the Math route can't either. It's mainly a question of a) whether we can get a religion later if we delay it vs. b) how badly is our economy going to crash?

I'm still on the fence, honestly.

On a semi-related note: I feel like it's too early to pick up Masonry. I know it's a Mids prereq, but I don't think we can justify starting Mids yet. We need more cities first, which in turn will require some military. Jowy seems to like to send in reconnaissance forces. If we can kill his first probe, he might stop. If we can't, we'll be in another eternal war.

First, the turn report. Then I'll get to your last post.

Crêpes was founded this turn. Late to 3 cities considering Imp, but more cities will follow soon.

Crêpes are amazing. They're also super cheap in Bretagne. Which makes sense, as it contains nothing fancy.

Also, this is not the way you eat them. What the hell, English people ?!

I'm not intentionally being a pain to Jowy, but it doesn't mean I don't enjoy it.

Hooked copper is frightening.

Now techs :

First choice is AH vs sailing. Whale tile vs deer tile is an exchange of 1 food vs 3 coins, so pretty even. Getting horse vs lighthouse+TRs+Moai is not an obvious choice either. Lighthouse transforms the whale tile into a 4/1/4 which is objectively great.
I'm leaning towards AH because there's a worker in the deer area that doesn't have anything to do besides roading to the next city sites, so he's available for camping duty.

Maths vs religion will depend on where we stand after masonry. Writing is only important to get us a quick scientist, but we could go for priesthood, a temple and a shrine for our first GP instead. I doubt we can get the Oracle while going for the Pyramids but getting some of the religious line means priesthood->CoL for our UB may be viable.

We met Molach's wounded scout (he was on the highlighted tile).

Also, we have 2 monsters inside our borders. I assume we're not winning that battle.

I realized yesterday that growing the cap to 5, then whipping the granary before starting the next settler is stupid, as the city won't put food into the granary before the settler is done. It's better to grow to 5 then start the settler, double whip it, then whip the granary. The granary doesn't fill itself faster but the settler comes sooner
