Let's give this another shot with a new roster! We're playing through Fire Emblem 6: Fuuin no Tsurugi (Binding Blade).
We will first draft units into our teams, then complete the game in as few turns as possible, only using the units we picked.
We will play (mostly) chapter by chapter, writing reports on what happened and how many turns we took.
We are allowed to look at spoilers from the other teams after we have finished the chapter ourselves.
Rules:
1. Roy, Marcus, Merlinus, Lalam/Elphim and Fa are freebies.
2. Each team drafts 12 units by snake pick.
3. Normal mode.
4. Undrafted units may recruit characters, rescue undrafted units and NPC's, trade, visit shops and armories, and dig up items in the desert.
5. Undrafted units may not do anything not listed above, including but not limited to meatshielding, building supports, and opening doors and chests.
6. Warp staff is banned.
7. All Gaiden chapters are required to be visited. Chapter 20x (either route) does not count towards the total turn count up to 20 turns taken.
8. NPC's may do as they please without penalty.
9. The game must be played out to the True Ending.
10. Using an undrafted unit will have you take a 4 turn penalty per unit, per chapter.
11. However, undrafted thieves may be used to obtain necessary promotion items.
12. No RNG manipulation allowed! (reloads are allowed though, just don't reload every step etc. honour rules)

I'd peg myself as having more FE experience than average but less than these two, so I'll try and lean on strong draft picks and sensible route planning to make up for it. Looking at the picks from the earlier draft, I think I have to go with one of the two starting Cavaliers. They both have an immediate impact and vest well over time, and with only 3 players and Warp banned, there aren't any particular niches that need to be filled immediately. I prefer Lance to Alan, because having a larger speed advantage means more opportunities to leverage (heavier) effective weapons while still doubling.
Either Allan or Shanna/Thany are the best options for first pick, and I doubt I'll be able to get both this time. Between the two of them I like Allan's combat better than Shanna's flying.
I'm going to try to get more earlygame units this time. Zeiss, Cecilia and Juno are all useful, but they arrive pretty late in the game and don't have, say, Niime's Warp utility. I'd like to get at least two of Lott, Dieck, Saul and Sue this time around.
I need to pick Dieck here to be my early game powerhouse since I missed out on Allen and Lance.
Second pick was between Miredy and Clarine. I hate to give up my favorite unit (Troubadour), but I will pick Meredy here.
She's a flier who joins around mid-game and she's supposedly one of the strongest units (in addition of being fast!).
What I expect to go next, not in any particular order:
Thany, Lugh, Clarine, Percival.
If any of those picks fall down to me I'll be happy.
Too bad about Dieck, but it was to be expected. I do at least have an early Cav and Thany now!
Lots of choices about who to pick next. Lott for more earlygame muscle, Sue for bow usage, Saul to guarantee a good staff user, one of the later Cavaliers...but let's see what El Grillo does first.
Okay, after banging my head against the wall for a bit, I've decided to employ this strategy:
- Delay Ellen. They won't pick a second healer. I'm not sure if she's even going to be that useful to be honest.
- There's a strong mix of characters up next: Rutger/Sue/Treck/Noah/Zealot/Shin/Echidna. Fenn and El Grillo can only pick 4 of those.
- The thing is: The area at which I'm most likely to get screwed at is thieves. Chad and Astohl are fine, the third one really isn't.
- However, are thieves THAT useful? It seems that most maps are conquest, so one would assume that by the time I'm ready to finish the map, the thief won't be nowhere close to having looted everything (or in some cases, anything).
So yeah, I think I'll risk it and won't pick a healer nor a thief right now.
Instead I will pick Zealot. He joins at the same time as Treck and Noah who are the "back-up cavaliers", but Zealot is pre-promoted.
I value instant stats highly in a playthrough where I won't have time to farm levels.
