How to run Civ on Wine (for Macs)

I loaded RtR 2.0.7.4, and could open the save via both 'Play a Scenario' and 'Play Game -> Enter Worldbuilder -> Load WB Save'.
Thanks ipecac. I'm in the process of following your guide. It's a new experience for me, as I've never used Wine before. I wanted to clarify something quickly: I bought the Mac version of Civ4 from steam, and by that, I mean the version that Firaxis produced. This means I can log into Steam normally through my Mac and run the game smoothly. For single player, I haven't had a problem and I've been playing like this for more than a year, but I have not gotten multiplayer to work, or for the RtR mod to work with more than 18 leaders in a game.
Is my understanding correct that when I go through this procedure to install PlayOnMac and then Steam there, that there is a separate (virtual) machine on my laptop, and that virtual machine is where I need to have everything installed? For instance, on my Mac version of Civ4, I have it stored at: Code: /Users/myname/Documents/Civilization\ IV\ Beyond\ the\ Sword/ And the MODS/ folder is a directory inside the directory above. However, I'm assuming when you say this: Quote:Install mod as per normal into the /Mods/ folder. You really mean installing it in the "virtual machine version" and *not* the MODS directory (in capital letters)? Sorry if I'm not using this terminology correctly. And if my understanding is correct, how do I access the /Mods/ folder?
Update:
I have installed Steam using PlayOnMac, and then I had to install Beyond the Sword there again (which makes sense). Then I opened Beyond the Sword there and it seemed to work. The fonts were a bit off but they actually match ipecac's screenshots so I am not worried. I played a new game for 10 turns and things seemed fine. Unfortunately, loading a mod (e.g. Rhye's and Fall) does not seem to work. I can load the mod, click on PLAY NOW, modify game settings, but I can't reach the actual game itself since it crashes, saying that Wine has run into an error. I found that this new Beyond the Sword game I installed is in Code: /Users/myname/Documents/My\ Games/Beyond\ the\ Sword/ I can paste a mod folder (e.g., RtR 2.0.7.4) inside the MODS folder above, and I can click and open it up in the emulated Beyond the Sword game. Unfortunately, trying to start a game results in the same error with Wine crashing. I think I'm going to try and recreate the steps Zalson posted: http://www.realmsbeyond.net/forums/showt...p?tid=8244 This might require installing the regular Civ4 game as well? There also seems to be confusion over where to install mods, exactly. With Macs, there isn't a Program Files directory, so I'm not sure where to put mine. But perhaps getting Civ4 there first would help? (July 8th, 2016, 21:02)DMOC Wrote: Thanks ipecac. I'm in the process of following your guide. I wanted to clarify something quickly: I bought the Mac version of Civ4 from steam, and by that, I mean the version that Firaxis produced. You need to run Windows versions of Civ 4 (CD or Steam) on PlayonMac. For steam, then mod then goes into /Users/[user]/Library/PlayOnMac/wineprefix/Steam/drive_c/Program\ Files/Steam/steamapps/common/Sid\ Meier\'s\ Civilization\ IV\ Beyond\ the\ Sword/Beyond\ the\ Sword/Mods
Upon further inspection, it seems like I was mistaken: Civ4 Beyond the Sword on Steam has one version that can be interchangeably used for the Mac and Windows versions. In other words, I don't need to pay for separate versions. I have already installed the windows version of Beyond the Sword as attested by my most recent post above.
I found the folder directory you pointed out (wow, that is long!). I pasted the RtR 2.0.7.4 folder there. Then, using PlayOnMac, I started up Steam, then clicked on Beyond the Sword to start it, and then loaded 2.0.7.4. Unfortunately, I can't actually open a game with this; I can get the game settings, then it crashes. I'll try this again tomorrow and document my steps more thoroughly. Perhaps there is an alternative to PlayOnMac I can try.
I decided to document what I did yesterday. It doesn't work but perhaps this makes it clearer what I did and ipecac might be able to catch a silly mistake I made.
First, I installed PlayOnMac, and installed Steam there. Second, I can open Steam and see Beyond the Sword installed there. I open up the game normally and play the Earth 18 civs scenario (just as an example game). I played for about 50 turns and things look good. The only weird thing is that some of the fonts are off. Then I put in the RtR 2.0.7.4 mod in what I believe is the correct folder. I clicked "Get Info" on the RtR folder to get the file path. I open up the game and am successfully able to open RtR. Unfortunately, actually trying to play a game (this time, again the Earth 18 civs scenario) results in an error. I think the next step is to try and un-install the game and then use wineskin instead of PlayOnMac. Out of curiosity ipecac, did you use PlayOnMac? PS: the photobucket website has really degraded in quality since I last used it a few years ago. With Dropbox making me change my links, I'm going to need to find a new place to store my photos.
DMOC, I've had some trouble with CIV4 crashing when I first boot PlayOnMac. Additionally, I've had steam crashing on me. Usually it crashes and I don't see the notification until after I've been frozen while looking at the loading screen.
Restarting the program (play on mac) and restarting steam can help. It does for me. You are technically using the FINAL RELEASE version of CIV4 BTS -- try downgrading to the "beta." That might help? EDIT: fixing typos. adding a phrase to be friendlier. |
