Haven't read the article yet, so not commenting on it.
But I'm one who strongly dislike unlocks, and I find your arguments kinda contradictory. wink

So I don't have a lot of free time, but if I want to play certain ships, I am forced to play others first that I have no interest in, or to play until I get a certain set of random events ?
That is forcing my hand and telling me how I should play.

Why not give me all the toys now, and let me have my fun the way I want ?
Why force me through a restricted path first ?

I had quite a discussion some time ago about it, for a another game, but it applies here as well:

Clearly, I hold a minority view.
Players and game designers looove their unlocks and extended tutorials (chicken / egg ?).

I just wish a few game designers would dare go against the trend and provide games free of that horrible aspect.

I am annoyed that I still havent managed to unlock the crystal ship and am being forced to play ships I dont enjoy in order to hope to eventually get to the point of unlocking it

I have no problem to admit that you have a point there, but it makes a major difference if you just don't like unlocks and prefer more choice from the beginning, or if you oppose unlocks because you feel they hinder the progress of other players. One is your personal taste which is a perfectly valid point, the other is highly patronizing.

As for a solution: IIRC the randomness of the Crystal ship unlock has been critized by other players as well and I would agree that it's not a great design decision. Maybe a compromise would be to award points for certain actions (like in Dream Quest) and let you pick unlocks yourself in order to allow you quicker access to your preferred content.
That being said I personally feel unlocking features is an important part of a game's motivation, but that's just my opinion.

My main point to rather include unlocks would be that it is often easy get access to all content through certain software tools. In the case of FTL, there is a savegame editor available which allows you to unlock single ships and achievements. So if you don't like the randomness of the Crystal Ship event, just unlock it and get the rest of the achievements as intended. If you don't like unlocks in general, just make everything available right from the start.

Re ship tiers - I still play old version, and the torus is very solid there. Easy win on normal. Maybe that is why ppl rate it so high noe...fond memories.

I agree with Gustaran about article. Article's points would be very valid for Rogue Legacy. Not seeing the point for FTL and especially ToME which he mentions. Unlocks in ToME are partly to 'protect' new guys from too muny keypresses to learn early on. Unlocks aren't obviously better than basic options, just tend to be more complex/more keypresses/alternate ways to move/tougher starting dungeon and such. No chance ppl stay at the poor level because they waste time unlocking 'corruptor' class.

I don't know if people are that into mods, but I found this, and it looks interesting.

So, I had a flawless run on hard with the Federation C on FTL the other day. And...I actually recorded it.

I also have a playthrough of a mod of FF1 that I need to finish uploading onto youtube one of these days...

Why did you choose the Federation C? You yourself admit in the video that it is a terrible ship, so why fly it?
Surprise! Turns out I'm a girl!

We've already got an FTL thread so I took the moderator liberty of moving the previous two posts over here.

Yes, Fed C is a lousy ship, with terrible anti-synergy between the artillery and boarding, which in turn occupy too many system slots and crowd out the important stuff in drones/cloaking/hacking. But like anything with FTL, you can pick whatever ship you want for whatever kind of challenge you want. And the flak artillery isn't all that terrible by itself, it does clear the way well for a beam weapon.

Mainly, I was looking for a ship that would show off both gunship play and boarding, + the fun you can have with the clone bay, because I'm trying to get my brother into this game, and he lives across the country from me, so I wanted to stream something for him. So, Federation C seemed logical.

Sorry for the necro but I just came across the FTL Post Mortem from GDC.  Lots of nice insights from the 2 developers.
