[SPOILERS] scooter peruses RB's Greatest Hits

(September 6th, 2016, 12:12)scooter Wrote: 4) Best MP games at RB.

I kinda like #4, but if you can talk me out of naming a bunch of cities things like "Pitboss 18" and "FFH PBEM 1," please do.

OT4E's suggestion is The Best (lol) but this one could be kinda cool too if, whenever you found a new city, you post a little bit about what makes the game your city is named after so great, especially since y'all have a billion new lurkers reading this thread.

This could be amazing, sort of like a greatest hits series.

Quick scouting thoughts... How about SW-S for the explorer next turn? That gets us onto a jungle hill tile and also defogs any seafood resources along the coast. Then have the explorer cut east from there to explore the river valley.

I'll suggest moving SE with the southern longbow to reveal more of the coastline over there. We don't need to move on the grassland hill tiles because they'll be grabbed by the capital's borders when they pop in a few turns. Better to go SE, then SW along the coast and see if there's anything thing and avoid moving onto tiles that we'll grab with our culture anyway.

I would definitely move the northern longbow NE next turn, since that grassland hill tile is going to defog a pretty good expanse of territory. That's the northern edge of the Cylindrical map up there, right? I think our second city is pretty safe for the time being. It looks like we're set up to have the current explorer head south along the river, the second explorer go east and follow the other curve of the river, and this northern longbow defog what is probably a cul-de-sac in the north along the edge of the map.

Other teams... everyone has whipped their capital at this point except the RMOG team. They're either doing something with Serfdom or more likely they are the ones who took the 2 turn Anarchy. I'm most pleased by the fact that no one has whipped their second city yet (note that mackoti and Nicolae have yet to play, although mackoti still hasn't even settled his second city yet). We're going to do so next turn, which mean that we've effectively "caught up" on the Anarchy turn with the Spiritual teams, assuming that they also whip a worker next turn. Anyway, this is all super early but I'm liking how we're starting out here.

No original thoughts on naming themes from me. I like some of the ones that have been suggested. nod

I second the best Civ4 MP games because this might be one of the last ones if Civ VI is any good

Good points on the scouting, Sullla. I keep forgetting how close we are to the northern border. Between the map reversal and the change from Toroidal -> Cylindrical, I'm a little turned around.

I liked Mardoc's Renaissance Man idea a lot, but to be honest I'm really stuck on the best games theme. So I'm going to go with that.

I see two ways to do this.

1) Just name cities what the game is called, for example: Pitboss 18, PBEM 23, FFH PBEM 1, etc. This was my original thought.

2) Name cities as a description of the game involved. "The Big One," "Astronomy Bulb," "Pocketbeetle" for each of those games as an example. Commodore suggested this variant to me.

I think the advantages of both are obvious. Any thoughts on which sounds better?

I like the description, but you might run into problems with the city name length limit.

You could always be spiteful and name every city the same thing, to confuse the other players plans of attack. :D

Frankly, with intensive micro plans, such an approach is far more likely to confuse yourself than to confuse anyone else. Especially since the AI-diplo-only rule means other players won't be communicating through text anyway.

Regarding city naming, I still like the Zerg Buildings idea, but I'm okay with option #2 for the famous older RB games.

THE DAILY ROLL

TURN 187: SCOOTER'S GREATEST HITS

Death throes reached across the land as a regime of whips and bleeding hands becomes the de facto norm of the day. Only the Dutch are relieved for the time being, for it is now apparent that each nation will have two great coasts, meeting oceans which calmly await the delivery of dikes and east indiamen. The initial disorder and restlessness that plagues every nation's institution has worn off, and now the civic machinery may operate its efficient whip cycles. But for the Aztecs the greatest proclamation of the hour is that Scooter will no longer reign over an Aztec country of Aztec cities wearing Aztec names, but instead will name cities with titles which herald Realms Beyond's most memorable games and plays of Civilization IV. Hence the Renaissance era is to be lived to the utmost severity and style, as befits the designs of Caesar of the Aztecs.
