Zalson plays one turn at a time [COMPLETE]

The replay.

First turn: already with 1 session!

First war with Ramesses: by far my worst war. Incidentally, Victoria declared war on a terrible Pacal at about the same time. I think my war was prosecuted significantly better.

About when I was finishing off Ramesses, Shaka started mixing it up with Ragnar.

Pacal, being crushed by Victoria, managed to get the Music Great Artist maybe 5 turns before I could have researched it. What a bummer. That great artist probably would have let me win maybe 5 turns quicker, since I’d have been able to chain together my golden ages starting then.

Qin declared war and it went very poorly for him. While the first war as a long fought thing. The second war was not. Took all of 25 years. It was so fast that I missed the screenshot! Here’s the end of the first war.

(Yes, I know I can pause the replay. But it’s just not the same, you know?)

In contrast, my war with the vikings was over in 2 turns. Shaka took 3 turns.

Compared to that, Victoria took forever, all of 8 turns! Well, realistically, it only took me 5 turns.

Final Graphs (score isn’t included because why?)

GNP
[Image: t264-2.jpeg]

All I can think is: what’d I do AD1765? I think that may have been the turn I poured all my spending into espionage on Shaka.

MFG
[Image: t264-14.jpeg]

A little bit better graph here. You can see that one golden age lapse after the conquest of China.

Crop Yield

The best graph I’ve got: I think this was the best play I did.

Power
[Image: t264-4.jpeg]

A little bummed that I didn’t get to kill Pacal. You really can see when I killed Victoria’s big stack smile

Good thing I am number 1 in all those Demos

Most built: Jewish Temple/Cav

Most killed: Longbows

Can’t believe I founded 30 cities. I could have easily had 20 more.

Recap

Played a 51 hour game over and 155 sessions. Probably spent about twice as long reporting, if not longer. No idea how many words but over 500 screenshots.

Thanks to all of you who came along for the ride. Special thanks to T-Hawk and Mardoc. Your patient advice was really helpful.

Also, shout out to the feedback at the beginning of the game: OT4E’s comment that I should work the gems mine into my plans really was what cracked it open for me. It definitely got me out of my comfort zone and was the right play. Thanks, OT4E.

If I’m leaving anyone else out, I apologize. It’s not intentional!

While 185,892 is the best score I’ve ever gotten (as far as I know), I definitely could have gotten it higher (by taking Viking lands and holding instead of burning them down). However, I’ve learned a lot about this game, just in time for it all to be made obsolete by Civ 6. Woot.

Here are the things I am proudest of in this game, in no particular order.

  1. Reporting the entire game
  2. Use of slavery civic to its fullest potential
  3. One-Turning the Mausoleum of Mausollos
  4. Realizing and learning things about worker management.
  5. Answering just about every thread comment.
  6. Reporting the entire game.
  7. Winning on turn 264
Things I’m not proud of:
  1. Kufah/Najran debacle (founding them before I could get my borders popped)
  2. Not making use of spiritual as effectively as I could have
  3. Not beelining Knights (probably could have cut off 10/20 turns that way)
  4. Burning Ragnar’s cities instead of keeping them/not refounding in Ragnar’s land.
  5. Not expanding as quickly as I could have. While I didn’t have very good land, there were some fishing villages that I should have prioritized much more quickly. I’ll do that next time.
Thanks for reading.

Did you have Dom on? If so you probably would have triggered dom with Ragnar land. Also in this game it didn't matter, but flight is really useful in these games. A few airports to airlift units to the other islands and with air units able to debase anywhere in 1t if you need a few extra units it is the best way to go.

Thanks for the entertainment! And for being such a good sport about reporting in such detail to let us criticize you so much... smile

Thanks, mackoti and Mardoc. Glad you were entertained.

REM, just conquest enabled. Otherwise I totally would have reached domination -- maybe even before Ragnar. The starting continent was pretty big.

Re: flight. Even Airships kind of turned the tide. The ability to damage the top defender, even just by 20%, really contributed to my success against Shaka and Ragnar. They were probably worth more than the $60/beakers a turn from my monasteries.

Thanks for the kind comments.

Yeah, airships are sneaky useful for finishing up on conquest. That 20% damage doesn't sound like much, but with Civ 4's combat math, that can swing combat odds from 30% to 70%. And their other great property is to jump to the front lines immediately upon building them, rather than traveling for a dozen turns.

It's an extra hit on the top 4 defenders!
