It was a good match too. I watched the stream that ChessNetwork did, where he commentated on the game as it played and explored possible gambits and future moves. I'd highly recommend it for anyone like me who isn't a full student of the game to get a lot of that just looking at the moves.

Just had a very enjoyable game. Having lost 0-3 to this higher-rated opponent in 5 min blitz, I got my own back in the fourth game:

1. e4  e6 2. Nf3  d5 3. e5  c5 4. d4  cxd4 5. Nxd4  Nc6 6. Bb5  Bd7 7. Bxc6  bxc6 8. O-O  c5 9. Nb3  Qc7 10. f4  Ne7 11. Nc3  Ng6

Looks like a semi-normal French, but he sacrificed a pawn to open the position.

12. f5  Nxe5 13. fxe6  fxe6 14. Bf4  Bd6 15. Bxe5  Bxe5 16. Nxd5

16...exd5 17. Qxd5  O-O-O 18. Rf7

I was slightly concerned at this point but managed to find a solution after ~30 seconds thought

18...Kb8 19. Nxc5  Bc8

At this point everything looked safe. A little tactical skirmishing then ensued:

20. Qb3+  Qb6 21. Kh1  Rhf8 22. Rxf8  Rxf8 23. Qd5  Bc7 24. b4  Qd6 25. Qh5  h6 26. Rd1  Rf5

And then he allowed me a pretty ending

27. Ne4  Qe5 28. Qh4  Rf4 29. Qg3  Qxe4 30. h3  Rh4 31. Kg1  Bxg3 32. Rf1  Qe3+ 33. Kh1  Rxh3+ 34. gxh3  Bb7+ 35. Rf3  Bxf3#  0-1

Nice. Defending against a sacrificial attack can be nerve-wracking. Was 19.. Bc8 an only move? Pretty sure I would have blundered into mate there.

Watching Carlsen play Karjakin has also been nerve-wracking. I'm cautiously optimistic now after game 10.
I have to run.

Thanks! I was taken aback by the knight sacrifice, but I didn't feel that I had blundered beforehand or that the position was objectively worse for me, so I wasn't too worried.

And the adrenaline rush is part of the fun, especially when you defend successfully with counter-tactics and win!

I haven't run the game through an engine yet, but 19...Bc8 is probably the only move after 18...Kb8 19 Nxc5.

18...Bd4+ may also work and is a possible alternative to 18...Kb8 but I'm not sure. I was planning on playing it until I determined that there seemed to be no more danger after 18...Kb8 19 Nxc5 Bc8.

I've been sorta cheering for Carlsen this time through too, since I don't have a nationalistic interest either way. Looking like we might more to the quick games depending on how today goes.

This series is definitely rekindling my love for the game, been working through a lot of tactics and losing quite a few online matches trying to shake off the rust.
