It was a mate in ~30+ situation, with a timer of under 2 minutes to go....

One could also phrase it as "it was a 4 move maneuver which either would have cost black the rook or gets him mated".  wink

But that miss in time trouble was not was I was referring to. Carlsen entered the endgame in game #2 with two bishops against rook, an evaluation which quickly changed to values between +1.5 and +2.0 and most important a time advantage of 10 minutes to Karjakin's 2 minutes.
If you have followed Carlsen's tournament performances throughout the year you will most likely know that Carlsen is known for outplaying his opponents in completely equal endgames through his superior skill. Therefore, with an advantage in position and a lot more time on the clock, I expected this to be a win for Carlsen (which most commentators did as well).
