Well, that did wrap up even faster than I expected! I was thinking it would take about 30 more turns from my last turnset, and instead we were able to reach the victory in just 17 turns. Another turn or two and we would have topped the 1000 tourism/turn mark. We had also just about finished the entire cultural tree, and would have been out of new civics to research by Turn 200. Not bad with our variant rules.
I loved the lategame lumberjacking down in the tundra. That was both effective and hilarious to see in practice. Those names were great!
Interesting that Civ6 allows for much longer city names than Civ4. There was actually a point in Civ4's prerelease lifespan where you could type incredibly long names, and I still have a picture of that somewhere. Anyway, that was a fun addition to our empire in the closing turns.
One thing I'm not a huge fan of: selling cities to the AI for Great Works. The AI in this game feels a little too willing to accept deals involving cities, both taking them and giving them away. I'll keep this in mind for future events; we'll want to take this off the table if we do a competitive Cultural victory Epic. It was useful to see it here as a learning exercise as we're all still picking up how to play Civ6.
So here's what was going on with the tourism numbers at the end of the game:
I grabbed the last savegame file and played the last 7 turns to get to the victory screen myself. This picture is taken from that effort, and I must have done slightly different moves than Molach because I ended up with different numbers. Anyway, the base tourism number (the 984 at the top of the screen) gets fed through these various modifiers, and then that tourism amount gets sent to every other civ each turn. Note that the trade route bonus for Online Communities policy is ENORMOUS; the +75% bonus is worth something like 700 tourism/turn here, and the +25% bonus from having Open Borders with everyone is doing work too. The difference between the civs where we have a trade route and those where we don't is obvious.
After running through these modifiers, we were producing 7860 tourism/turn at the end of the game. We get a foreign tourist every time that we accumulate 900 tourism with another civ, which means we were getting almost 9 foreign tourists per turn. (It's actually a foreign tourist for every 150 * Number of Civs in Game, which is 150 * 6 = 900 for this game.) With that many foreign tourists coming in each turn, we accelerated across the finish line in a real hurry. A sub-Turn 200 Cultural victory is a very good result, and I think we should be proud of what we achieved here. Great work everyone!
I had a blast playing this game. Thanks to everyone for all of the contributions throughout this thread.
I will probably look to start up another succession game after the holiday season - Civ6 feels like it should be fertile terrain for succession games.
