XCOM 2 is my #1 too. Rimworld would be a close contender if not for the fact that it's technically still in Alpha, even though it feels like a full game already. The dev has high standards and keeps updating his game, which in this age of hit and run releases is very admirable.

Captain Sonar. I've only played it three times, so it may not have longevity, but it's a lot of fun.
Completed: RB Demogame - Gillette, PBEM46, Pitboss 13, Pitboss 18, Pitboss 30, Pitboss 31, Pitboss 38, Pitboss 42, Pitboss 46, Pitboss 52 (Pindicator's game), Pitboss 57
In progress: Rimworld
My favorite game released this year: The Witness. Nice puzzle game that encourages awareness of philosophy.
Runners up: Dark Souls 3 (strong new installment in a series I admire), Dominion: Empires (a super hardcore expansion to a game I already found strategically compelling).
I guess Darkest Dungeon was 2016 too technically. Did they ever patch out the horrible horrible mid-game grind/terrible economy?
