Five techs...that should make for a nice score jump.
Poor Exploit...this game has already turned rather vicious. We will want more troops just as soon as Monarchy comes in (or just before) and we can support them without crushing our tech rate. Hopefully IW will be available by then, and we will have the iron which so obviously must be somewhere close by....
No objection to OB with Carthage, they have been quite helpful.
On the Sailing question, I believe you are correct. If there is a river connection (not blocked by barb culture, non-OB civs, etc.) but only one side has Sailing then only that side gets the trade routes. The other civ will see a network connection and can trade resources, but will not get trade routes.
I am pretty sure of this, as it has happened to me (as the non-Sailing civ) more than once. Very annoying.
On to Monarchy! Very, very slowly at first, but onward nonetheless.

Babylon:
He tried to threaten Krill. The thing is, that if Krill died tomorrow, it wouldn't matter. We'd still all have Alphabet. And the only way to kill him is spears; nothing else has a chance against War Chariots.
The OB portion should be recorded for the Wall of Agreements.
Babylon Wrote:Pericles: hey pal, should have a NAP answer by end of this turn. it's gonna be a super long one anyhow
me: right, ok. scores, they are a changin'
Pericles: indeed they are. but to be fair, cept myself, exploit and swiss, everyone 'non-hydra' wasn't exactly setting it alight to begin with lol. the gap is gonna look rather humourous over the next few turns
me: Especially with Krill way out in front
Pericles: yup, and his still paper thin military.
the Right of passage part of the nap, when signed, you wont allow any other civ's to go thru your lands via open borders or any other means who have an intention of aggresion against babylon. is that correct?
obviously the reverse would be true
me: aye, stacks of units won't be allowed. I mean, scouting warriors, yeah. but we won't let military forces use our borders, if they're going for you/Mali
Pericles: ok fair enough
6:15 PM just so you're in the loop, i'm just awaiting mali's approval. they wanted a bit of clarification which ive just sent them
me: ok
Pericles: since the non-hydra members must stick together for now people are generally wanting to keep their options open, warring you isnt on my current agenda or why would i be signing a NAP though
me: yeah, we were trying to get this thing signed before the hydra broke
Pericles: i would also say that whilst i have a valid NAP- i take that literally. if i gifted a 3rd party units to use against you i'd consider that a violation. yes i know you were , but i wanted to see where chips settled first. there was one civ i wasnt sure was on board [OOC: Likely France]
me: right, gifting's pretty blatantly circumventing the NAP
Pericles: but turns out that unfortunately they are, yeah of course but there's some sneaky people out there
me: in this game? No. None at all.
Pericles: hehe. krill has played a very dangerous game though, considering all his southern neighbours heh
me: well, he went north, not south
Pericles: oh i didnt mean his scouting. i know im not as good at C&d as yourself [OOC: What C&D? That ship has sailed] but i give it a go, and i know he's very very fragile
me: but he's now got Bronze Working, and plenty of pop. [OOC: Shocking. The civ with Alphabet traded for the most critical tech out there, and as Spiritual will switch this turn anyways]
Pericles: true true. anyhow im off nite mate
me: ok, nite

HRE:
I removed the technical bits about getting Hunting passed around. Forgot that fishing isn't needed for river connections. Makes me look more foolish, oh well.
Ilios Wrote:me: We'll try to road to the river around T70 or so, we'll get those trade routes online, once Sailing comes in from Portugal
DIM: we'll found a city in two turns on the river that leads to your lands
me: where? Midas' river runs close
DIM: abour 10 tiles north from your horse city
me: ah, ok, that river, not midas' river, we'll get Midas' river connected fairly soon. well, T70ish. that horse river runs all the way down to Babylon
DIM: so you're connected to them. we have trade with Inca
me: well, once we get Sailing, since there's tiles outside our borders. Fishing DID save us there. the horses came online empire-wide at the same time
DIM: does fishing give resource connection?
me: yeah
DIM: don't think so
me: oh? It's automatic?
DIM: we had copper online on a river, no road, no fishing
me: oh, not something I usually pay attention to
DIM: you get connection on a river within your borders
me: and it's Sailing for outside your borders
DIM: yup
me: civstats is hilariously full of score increases. once everyone logs in, we'll be 9 of the top 10-11
DIM: portugal has warrior near midas, you should meet him in a couple of turns
me: fantastic
I'm gonna run
DIM: ok later, congrats!
me: thanks, we've done well so far

Hap, feel free to log in and offer OBs, I'll be Gchatable tonight, but not Civ-capable until late.
I don't want to end turn until we hear back from Babylon/Mali, although everything's been moved.
Draft to France:
CHASM Wrote:To the Anglo-French Empire,
The glorious holiday known as "Alphabet Day" has come in for our two civilizations. Carthage has a warrior at the far SW edge of our borders, and we will send him your way, although it might take some time for them to arrive. Portugal has a warrior headed our direction, and we will met them soon, and then direct them east.
Your southern neighbors, Byzantium, were preparing for a chariot rush on Babylon. We do not expect that to still happen, but there is a chance they will come for a member of our group, and you are their closest target. They do not have copper, but at least before our group became known, were heading for Iron Working.
We saw your settler; is he heading for the copper to your northwest? If you are not, we are interested in settling a city 2S1W of the copper, but understand that the copper is closer to you than us, and your settler was built first.
*Salutation here*

Draft to France looks good. I am away from my Civ computer tonight as well, so OBs may have to wait until someone can offer them.

Carthage has OBs with us. I sent Carthage a quick e-mail telling them the quickest way through our territory to head towards France: NE until they hit our roads, head to Beaver Rock, then we'll take it from there.

Poor France :-p
I guess they feel pretty good about their position since they haven't bothered us with any NAPs and such. Not sure how we will divide everything between teams.
We will also get Archery this turn and Masonry next turn or 2 right?
If so should be try to get a microplan for the GW out at some point? It would be nice to get it before we go and kill France. At some point we still to figure out what happened with France and HRE's settler would need to get them in chat most likely and segway.

France message sent. I thought we were going to meet the Aztec this turn, but that did not happen. Next turn when we meet the Ottomans we can ask them.
So, the Aztec are our source of Archery, not sure when that's going to happen. India has a warrior to our west, so we should meet them in about 5t or so. With 2 workers, here's what a Great Wall plan would look like (T0 is the turn we get Masonry):
T-1 (Earliest: T68 ): Road the stone
T0-T3: Quarry the stone.
T3: Begin producing the Great Wall @ BR
T4: Move each worker to a forest
T5-T7: Chop. That's 60 base hammers (Math will be in by then). We'd only need 15 hammers of production to get the Great Wall. Not a problem; just working the furs + wheat gets us 3hpt.
Other (I think better) option:
T0: Move Bashful and Grumpy onto forests @ AF.
T1-3: Chop.
T3: Begin producing TGW @ AF. With some overflow from another build (namely, a whip), we could finish it instantly. Note: A GSpy is not our preferred GP, he's mostly only useful for Golden Ages. It'll take 50t to produce a GSpy, but only 17t to produce a GSci somewhere else off of library specialists, and delay the GSpy even later. I think a decent ETA for our first GSci is T100 or so, I don't think we should be running specialists until we've grown a bit, but that's certainly open to discussion.

Talked to France, I gave them a verbal NAP until we iron something out. Bolded is my clumsy attempt at trying to get their story about the HRE. I should have asked what they thought about the HRE but I think this was good. I gave them a lot of random free information they were going to get sooner or later. I guess they don't have an NAP with HRE exactly and that HRE have been nice toward them. We probably need to ask HRE about how we want to proceed with NAPs. My guess is something along the lines of "TXX, afterwards we can renegotiate, we don't expect the Hydra's Cartel to hold together too much after the first round of techs and rival tech groups emerge."

We were just trying to catch up with you
Sent at 1:03 PM on Wednesday
teammodm: hello, did you get the email
me: yes
Thanks for the fast response
teammodm: cool, thanks for the intel
your team has english members?
timezones match i think
me: all our people are in the eastern and central United States
teammodm: Doh, sorry.
me: Its hard to chat up people in Europe
teammodm: i'm usually around this time, please feel free to call
me: But with regards to the Hydra/CAN alliance, its us, them, HRE, Aztec, India, Egypt, Carthage, Ottomans, and Portugal
teammodm: Not Rome
me: I don't think so
They are with Exploit I think
and may be trying ot attack Portugal according to Krill
I don't have the diplo stuff infront of me right now
teammodm: right, always wary of paets
me: Well
We saw Babylon's purple borders and flipped out for about a turn
teammodm: please feel free to send anything of interest - we'd do the same of course
me: Well, are you aware of the Map?
teammodm: i wasn't
me: you'' have to meet darrelljs' team
but he's making a world map out of screen shots, I don't know where he is though
teammodm: we have scouts out so shouldn't be long
me: best to ask Krill when oyu meet him
or you can forward them through us if you trust us there much
teammodm: sure, i'd happly swap screen shots, your team and ours
you can pass them on
me: I'll have to talk it over with everyone, we haven't taken our set yet
the final map only gets sent to those who send in screenshots
teammodm: thats ok with us i think, we'll try to meet up with is it sunrises team?
me: yes
Bismark of India
We probably wouldn't mind a screenshot trade since OB is coming up but I have to talk it over with everyone just to be sure
You know how it is
teammodm: of course
me: Oh yeah, we were curious about what your long term plans were
We were planning on expanding southwards for a little bit.
teammodm: well, we are still unclear if the allience comes with NAPs or Mutal Defence
me: We've been making ones iwth our neighbors
just NAPs + 43 EP limit + no allowing hostile armies through territory
teammodm: we could sign a NAP
me: We were getting around to that after our microplans for our tech were ironed out
Someone might add in something like a settling agreement since we are so close.
teammodm: shall we say a verbal NAP till we can iron out terms etc?
me: Sure, I don't think we have plans on killing each other very soon :-P
teammodm: your right there
me: We heard there were some goings on between you and HRE due to your close proximity
Sent at 1:20 PM on Wednesday
teammodm: you could say that, we had a diplomatic exchange, it was settled amicaly
me: I hope you didn't mind me asking, we just wanted to make sure all the alliance teams were getting along ^_^
We have to worry aobut those southerners after all
teammodm: of course not, we don't intend to lie to our friends
please feel free to ask any question
we responsed to the HRE on the basis of their first contact with us
have you been as fortunate as they with your land?
me: Heh
I was just going to ask you the same question
Judging from what we've seen and heard, land seems to be pretty bland.
There are some nice bunches of resources
and long stretchs of nothing
teammodm: your quite right, i think it's be over managed during creation. but then i do like a random map, adds incentives
me: Yah
its quite barren compares to PB2
which makes the early game much more interesting
teammodm: can i ask how you assess HRE as a team? have you played any prevoius games with them?
me: No I haven't palyed with any of them
They seem pretty straight forward though
Though their forwarding of messages from Krill has been somewhat sloppy
-_-
teammodm: thats relays for you
me: yeah
Have you found any intersting land?
all our border areas are barren
teammodm: not really, south of us is rubbish, which is why i was suprpised that your expanding that way
me: Well
not directly south
its interesting
the distribution of starting area resources are not the same
We've been informed that Byzantine has gold, silver, and metal
and horses
teammodm: thats generous. we might have iron, but who knows. does anyone you know have IW?
me: um
I think the Ottomans are on it
I need to check the list
Well one team is on it
teammodm: hopefully we will meet krill soonish, if he is east of us
me: HE probably is
there are 4 civs to each row it seems
we are on the same one as Krill and Carthage
teammodm: right, we should meet soon then
Sent at 1:33 PM on Wednesday
me: alright
well it was fun chatting but lunch is over and I need to get back to work
teammodm: ok, good to chat. catch you soon
me: Good luck We'll try to get back on you with an NAP, assume we have a general agreement not to attack each other until we get back to you
teammodm: yep, sounds good.
me: ciao

Is the Great Wall for cheap barb protection?
I have to run.
