[SPOILERS] JR4 tries his luck in PB 37

(July 8th, 2017, 14:13)JR4 Wrote: Oh, I changed the build to a galley after the screenshot was taken.

Cool - I missed that the shot was taken before changing some things around; sorry about that. Also, just generally, the wealth of information and screenshots you provide - for me, for shallow_thought, for global lurkers like Mardoc, and for the future when other players get to read this after the game - is just tremendous. It makes everything easy to follow (and makes it possible for a dedlurker to obsessively create microplans without the ability to log in to the game)!

That site in the south suddenly looks much, much more promising - as long as we can hold it!

There's a really weird image artifact on the picture of dtay's FAQ. Any chance we could get another screenshot of that?

And Chinese borders south of GJ is a problem for another reason: CML was in a turn split with dtay and had to come from the north, but Coeurva appears to have razed one of CML's cities and one of Ventessel's. That's a little hard to fathom if the two victims are this far apart by land, and I really don't like the idea that someone could be involved in a sea conflict this early - especially since circumnavigation was available (and has fallen) on this map. I feel like it's necessary to defend every city on the map - and also that almost no one is doing so; after all, we're number one in military power, and I feel like I want more units for defense!

It`s really weird. Looks like a bug to me. It`s still there when I zoom out. EDIT: You can just see it in the SW corner of the map.

An overview picture of Joey`s southern lands. He really has a lot of it. Also, there are now only 5 question marks left (civs we haven`t met) as a work boat of Dark Savant`s was spotted by our spear right next to the bananas. It looks like these seas will be heavily contested. I`m glad we`re building galleys right now in order to get the first choice sites for ourselves. We could offer him a map exchange to find out a bit more about the geography to our SE.

What a strange glitch! From the look of it, Mardoc accidentally (and/or for some intentional, esoteric reason) placed a river running alongside the sea, and the game couldn't figure out how to render riverside coast tiles? Or something? Weird....

Also, take a look at that workboat: It has three movement points! We now know who circumnavigated the globe! (And how he did it, surely.) I'd say definitely offer a map exchange with Dark Savant. We'll have a much better picture of the world if he agrees, including a lot of coast and islands that are actually pretty close to home!

TURN 71

It looks like someone is sending out a warrior in order to check out the lands before sending out a settler. We`re sending our spear to get rid of it asap. If Joey moves to the jungle hill he`ll almost have odds on our spear. The axe can`t get down there soon enough.

Also, Joey`s city expanded borders exactly ONE turn before Oghul Qaimish. Annoying. I was hoping to get an advantage in the cultural war. A Buddhism spread would help, but we still haven`t gotten a single spread.

The galley was whipped out in Muqa. I can`t wait to settle the islands. Good catch about the work boat of Dark Savant`s having 3 movement points. Map trade offered. Muqa`s expanded borders revealed a clam that a future city can put to good use.

EDIT: We`re still saving gold. Maybe we`ll have enough gold to start researching Mathematics at full speed next turn.

I just noticed that a Greek city on the jungle copper is able to share the wet corn with Joey`s established city. If he goes for that in addition to his already greedy city plant I think we should consider going for military techs instead. It`s on a hill for protection and not too far away from his other city. If he does it I`m inclined to think of him more as a long term enemy than a potential trading partner. We really can`t accept a 90/10 split of the disputed area..

I should have said something earlier; I knew he'd pop borders in State of Zijin one turn before us because I saw the monument there when ours was being finished.  If we want our religion to spread where we want it, we'll need missionaries.  Any spread to any of our cities would be enough to get them eventually, but that would require investment in either Masonry, Poly, and Mono, or a Monastery.  I really don't want to build a Monastery in Muqa if we can help it because it wants to build units  when growing (and a lighthouse at some point, and...) but anyplace else could fit one in if needed.  A shrine would also increase the spread rate; Priesthood is necessary (and masonry would be great if the Oracle is still available) to get that in a reasonable timeframe.  That said...

Yeah, if GJ plants another city east of State of Zijin, we probably need to punish him for it. If we're serious about fighting for that region in the short term though, we should start an Axe at Toregene. Our Chariots should probably move to support our efforts here too (even at the expense of scouting efforts, especially if we get Dark Savant's maps and they reveal a lot of what we're looking for anyway). If we want to project power in this direction (or even want the option to do so) we can't take half measures - as GJ already demonstrated when he founded State of Zijin.

Note Toregene's borders pop T73, at which point we'll have vision on the jungled copper hill from the city borders.

Getting visibility of that jungle copper will be very helpful. I changed the build in Toregene to an axe and moved the chariots toward Joey. Hopefully they won`t be needed but I agree that we have to demonstrate a willingness to fight for our share of the land. If Joey founds a city closer to us we`ll be at war sooner or later.

The NW chariot isn`t fully healed yet (it`s 2.2 health) with a promotion pending.

I'm pretty sure we'll be at war sooner or later anyway, but if he founds toward us again, there's a limit to how much "later" we can let it get. The hurt chariot should get up to ~3.1 health whenever it takes its promotion (and heals faster in our territory or preferably city regardless) but I can definitely imagine a scenario where one more unit, hurt or otherwise, can make all the difference at this stage of the game.

Note that if we're planning to declare war this turn OR positioning units (that he might theoretically be able to affect) in order to potentially do so in the next turn or two, we have to wait until after GJ plays (i.e. we'll have the second half of the turn split) because he's been playing before us.

Oh - also, a look at GJ's core/capital might be interesting....

TURN 72

Dark Savant rejected our map trade proposal. He probably thinks he`s explored more of the map than us (which is almost certainly true).

Joey`s warrior is still acting as a sentry. I moved our spear next to it. Let`s see how Joey reacts to this show of force. I really hopes he settles elsewhere. Look at that spread out empire of his.. Wow, that`s ambitious. Actually, I think he might be in the lead overall here.  Our units (2 chariots and an axe) continued southwards toward Joey. The axe in Toregene could be whipped next turn in order to let the city grow immediately after.

I moved the galley 2SE. It should just about be able to explore a couple of tiles before the settler finishes in Muqa on turn 76. The workers were sent to the river plains and both contributed to a cottage which will complete next turn. I`m unsure of how to get the most out of Muqa as it has a lot of food as well as a couple of good commerce tiles.
