[SPOILERS] JR4 tries his luck in PB 37

Graphs and demos: Dtay has a lot of units. Let`s hope that he doesn`t stab us here.

I just saw your post. Oh, I think we need those Triremes more than anything else. We can`t afford to be bullied on the seas as we have a lot of vulnerable port cities. The reinforcements are streaming in to the west coast. As long as Gavagai doesn`t have a huge army on his boats now we`re probably getting away with 3 cities lost. (Well, really just 2 productive cities).

Personally, I'd go for a one-turn unit in Bulugan instead of a WE (Swordsman if it's making 40, Axe or Spear if it's make 35, otherwise an Archer) and a 0-xp Keshik in Toregene instead of a Barracks. Hopefully what we have will be enough to hold and we'll be able to start thinking about pushing back (or assaulting State of Zijin) but I'm inclined to err in favor of More Units Sooner right now.

...oh. And I just noticed dtay is one turn away from Guilds. Um.

This probably means we should try to get a WE (or at least a cat) onto Chubei's grassland cows to encourage dtay to take his knights elsewhere. (And hope that's effective....)

It also militates in favor of white peace with Gav if he'll accept it, and ... well, whatever else happens, it's going to stay interesting!

I just saw this and was about to log in when.. Gavagai himself logs in. I don`t like much having the first half of the timer in a protracted war.. So, I guess we have to live with the builds. Especially Bulugan could have 1 turned a unit, I just figured that a strength 7 War Elephant would be useful if he disembarks some melee units. That would give us a chance to attack out. As for Toregene, I`m unsure of what the best build would be. It`s really annoying producing units without XP. As there is an axe on its way westwards (from Toregene) as well as that Archer finishing up in Borte next turn, I think we`re still good. Our most vulnerable cities are the ones in the NW. If we can get a few units in there, I don`t think he`ll get anywhere. Oghul Qaimish should be safe (as long as Greece stays out of the conflict).

EDIT: Yes, Knights are about to enter the battlefield. I agree with showing dtay a War Elephant asap for deterrence.

Yup. No worries; we may be glad we have that WE in the end, and even the barracks isn't bad - as long as we don't fall one unit short somewhere on a critical upcoming turn. (Actually, is there anywhere Bulugan's WE-to-be could go that would be visible from dtay's borders sooner than one we might produce in one of the northeast cities?

I'm (finally) getting to bed now, and of course we have to wait for T129 before we look at the game again anyway; have a great day!

...uh-oh.

dtay just whipped ten cities last turn. You know, the turn when he's about to get Guilds. My guess is that all ten were Horse Archers that have now already completed as Knights. If they come our way ... well, at least we've been building units. More would be good. A lot more (including Cats, but Cats need killing units to back them up) will be needed.

If that happens, and maybe even if not, when Muqa produces a GP, we can't build a shrine, unfortunately: It would be a question of whether a Golden Age is worth more or less than bulbing Theology for Fundamentalism at that point. Hopefully those knights are headed for Russia, but....

TURN 129

Okay, let`s start with the good news of the turn. Gavagai offered peace! I accepted straight away. Actually, there was an empty second trade window right behind. Oh well, we can`t complain about that. Things just got a little bit easier for us. Yes, I noted the insane amount of whips. Well, if dtay is coming for us with all of his force, then we`re pretty much dead anyway. I decided to go for a few infrastructure builds (which can perhaps help us catch up a bit). It`s a gamble to do it when Knights are about but I really think dtay is going north here. Anyway, we`ll have a bit of military so any attack on us would be costly. Most units headed north. Regarding the Priest that is about to be born - Hmm, it would be a shame to use it for a GA but if we come under attack we sort of have to. The decision has to be taken next turn already unfortunately. I still favor the Shrine. Oh, and there was a War Declaration in another part of the world that suits us just fine!

The Triremes were moved towards the Zulu border. They`ll make an amphibious assault a bit harder to arrange. An Archer was moved from Daliyetimishi to the mainland. We have a Spear/Archer on a boat right next to Kokejin. Chubei could certainly need more defenders. I assume that`s where an attack would be directed.

We need Longbows. Now. At least we`re finishing Monarchy this turn. I assume we`re revolting to Hereditary Rule right away. Feudalism is now a 4 turn tech at max science, but I think we can shave off a turn.

Graphs and demos: Dtay is still building units. Our crop yield hasn`t gone up a lot since the start of the Gavagai war.

Just to expand a bit on the decision on not going all military:
1) Dtay has a softer target than us, Yuri has fewer cities and highly likely a smaller army than us.
2) We can`t delay all that infrastructure for too long, but the big cities can continue making units to keep our power high. Also, we need a few more cities (though that`s not urgent).

If you disagree then we could make more units instead as we`re not in a turn split anymore.

Hmmm. I would whip the keshiks in Muqa and Chubei to get more hammers into the next builds there. Gav making peace and GJ declaring on Dark Savant are both excellent pieces of news though.

On units vs. infrastructure: With the potential threat coming from knights instead of boats, and with the builds that convinced Gav to give us peace, we no longer need warm bodies as much as we need real units. Cats, Wellies, and Keshiks are all good, and I would be inclined to build the cats from eastern island cities and ferry them over while northern Ger cities build 'phants and distant Ger cities build Keshiks. Non-Ger cities that aren't near the front probably might as well build infrastructure, sure. If we're desperate for Feudalism though, Wealth builds will get us there faster than buildings. Infrastructure is good for the long term, but we should make sure we have a long term!

I would consider offering dtay a fish-for-fish (or other health-for-health) deal. If he rejects it but re-offers, we would reject it in turn, but he'd be signaling that he wants to keep our border demilitarized. If he rejects it without re-offering, he's signaling that he either wants to attack us or is sufficiently unconcerned about his border with us that he'd like see us build up our forces fruitlessly while he attacks north. Of course, by offering it, we're signaling to him that we won't interfere if he attacks Russia (or whoever) - and I guess he could interpret it as a sign of weakness, but I think the main thing is that he'd know we're paying attention and see his build-up, especially coming on the heels of our peace with Gav.

(Note the health-for-health deal would be exclusively for signaling intent, which is why both sides would reject it, even if we're both agreeing to the peaceful borders by offering and rejecting the same deal back and forth: Actually accepting a deal gives information to everyone who's met us both, whereas the offer is just communication. Any offers more complicated than "health resource for health resource signals peaceful intent, iron for iron signals desire for joint war" will generally be misinterpretted hilariously.)

[EDIT: And as for "still building units," wait until you see dtay's power graphs next turn!]

[EDIT2: Would HR actually make an unhappy citizen happy anywhere? We want to be able to revolt to Vassalage as soon as Feud comes in, but if that's not an issue, or if we're going to be okay on happy until we get Feud anyway, the question is more complex.]
