Your conclusions fit my experience of playing Life + High Men closely. The fact that you really HAVE to splash into other colors in order to have any chance at a decent early-game says it all. I only found success after going mix Life/Chaos (didn't want to play Nature since I already did a Nature game before that).

As for Myrran snowballing, yeah - it's been my experience from several games, all of them Dark Elf so far. I will be recording/streaming my first game fairly soon - will post a link when I do.

Life is always going to be weak early game if heroism isn't good because your early game units aren't top tier. I'm not sure that's a flaw. Not every strategy should work.

Depends on your race I'd say. With high men, sure. Apparently not so with barbarians, but I dread the low resistance, so have only used lizardmen and high elves. + to-hit buffed longbowmen and javelins are a dread early. Through the mid game endurance (+holy armor/bless) dragon turtles are almost hilariously broken.

Looking forward to it!

Meanwhile I completed my High Men game :

While the High Men units were decent, 90% of the offensive work was done by a stack of heroes, as both enemy wizards were vulnerable to that (due to military races, they were slow on research and conveniently never reached Apocalypse/very rare creatures. I do wonder if the research costs don't make heroes too overpowered now as it gives them more turn to conquer or raze enemies as well, but I suspect this time it was entirely the low difficulty and military races.) and I also used Pegasai a lot, while the high men units ended up guarding only one of the towers and/or don't nothing much. They are good but the magicians didn't like the Mana Leaks and melee units won't work on adamantium hammerhands supported by a life wizard who has Prayer and Blur.

Ai is Aggressive Perfectionist, has army strength almost equal to mine. (I'm way ahead in power production, spell power, and overall). He is calm with me (he's pure sorcery), and he is now attacking my cities almost every turn, so clearly hostile.

I didn't think you could get to calm relations, and still be hostile?

Chance to be hostile is...if I remember well :

Relation>=0:
32-(8*personality)+ (100-Relation/4) % to be hostile
Relation<0:
32-(8*personality)+50-Relation % to be hostile

personality is the usual 0-5, Aggressive is 2.
They can be hostile at ANY relation level if you don't have a treaty. At calm the AI should be offering one reasonably frequently.

Interesting. Ok. Wizard pact is done, so all good there. Thank you!

Also, 2 life/2 death/2 sorcery has gotten me WAY ahead of everyone, but I didn't run out and crush everyone with the very rares I managed to undeadify. So it's 1410, I've got almost 400 overland casting skill, but, my combat casting ability is atrocious (I have neither healing nor endurance, nor any damage spells better than star fires). So I'm winning, but, that's mostly due to summoning entire stacks of ghouls and promptly focus magicing the whole stack, anywhere I see enemy forces. I'll soon control all of myrror, but I have virtually nothing on arcanus. I'm not concerned with anything, yet, but that's because my opponents have barely got uncommon summons, and definitely no rares. I'll need to get my hordes to them fast, and I don't think I'll have any very rares left by that point (and I somehow never got any undead rares..), so things will be much slower going. At least I'm against lizardmen, orcs, and high men; no high resistance to stop the poison. I SHOULD be able to just say 'yup game over' considering my power production is like 4 times all the remaining ai combined, but without using heroes (which I hate using), I simply don't think I can. Shadow demons aren't enough of an upgrade over focus magic ghouls to say they can actually hurt anything the ghouls can't, and I have no rare summons to research. (I did get lionheart, for all the good that will do me.) So, I might get slaughtered with rares at some point. And both arcanus wizards are half sorcery, so its not like I'm likely to be able to do a SoM win.
