Sorry guys, I flipped a light switch without thinking and turned off the PC. I've moved it to a different outlet and started each game back up.

This also gave me a good opportunity to photograph where the magic happens:

Hi Sunrise - which save did you reload from? Looks like you used an older save as the game is paused again by rego and I'm stuck in a diplo screen, but from what I can tell, all of the build changes I made this evening have been undone...

Any chance you could restore it from the latest save instead, which should be the broker auto recovery save from around 02:50am UTC just earlier this evening?

Edit: sorry, my bad. You probably did reload from broker's recovery autosave, but since that was him logging in to unpause the game for me, all of my changes would have been after that anyway...

Manged to unpause eventually using the 'hammer pause while logging in' trick, so all ok here.

Sunrise: looks like civstats is futzed ... and at this stage I imagine it's going to be kinda important to maintaining turn orders, etc.

Alex: I tried to play just now but am away from my usual civ computer and having some Connectivity issues. If you need to switch turn order and play before me please go ahead and I will try to maintain the new turn order going forwards.

Otherwise if you are able to hold off I should be home in about 6-7 hours and able to play then.

Thanks

I'll login and check the turn timer. If it's going to last until tomorrow morning (UK) then I've got time to wait for you.

I'm off to catch a plane (or 5..). No guarantee of connectivity for the next 26 hours.

Since the turn rolls in 9.5hrs, and I'm playing first in 2 wars, I may need a hold after the flip.

Sunrise: instead of a pause, please can we consider just increasing the turn timer instead?

The pauses just create headaches for everyone due to the diplo screen issue and also trying to get things restarted. Since we are don't have that many players left and no-one has actually missed a turn in months anyway (if anyone can't play it just gets paused indefinitely) is it even giving us anything?

Just leaving it at 99 hours or something seems like it would be a lot more pragmatic and the game would probably even go faster since we wouldn't have to deal with all the pause issues every time someone has trouble playing...

My personal opinion is that it would make the game go a LOT slower. For various reasons, some civs (myself included at times) feel the need to run the timer to the end. We also saw that in the Apolyton demo game. People tend to play the whole timer. If it was set at 99 hours, then our turns would (Generally) last 99 hours.

Having said that, I don't really have a strong preference and would be fine either way

Rego - can you elaborate a bit? I'm not sure I can think of any legitimate reasons where I would wait until the 98th hour to play (except for an extended absence).

Are you talking about people waiting until the 98th hour for a tactical advantage of some kind (i.e. seeing what they change their builds to or where they move their units)? Maintaining turn order during wartime addresses that pretty well anyway since the sequence of play is regulated at that point anyway by wartime order.

Or are you talking about people routinely holding up the game to buy more time for meta-game diplomacy and trades? I can see the potential for abuse there but wouldn't have thought we have to worry too much about that with the players we have here (and easy to change the timer back if it turns out to be a problem).

Anyway, I don't have a strong opinion either on whether we make this change permanently; would still be nice to do it when people are away though as I do suspect it would save us quite a bit of hassle with pausing and all the issues that come with it.

OK, with Elkad out and at least two of us needing to play after him, I went ahead and paused the game ... and nothing else!
