edit: If you have a civ you really want to play then say so, because that's more important than optimizing the starting turns. We don't *have to* start with the best/right techs.

I think you've got them all. I like the new and improved Byzantium personally... they start with fishing/myst. Decent enough with an agressive leader (Toku!). But myst sucks and the timing to whip the first worker will be off I am afraid. But if you like them too, why not.

edit: but imo Charlie of Carthage or Rome should be better.

not going for a third edit... But really I am opened to anything. A spiritual leader should be fun too (I love them all, except Mansa lol)

OK fourth post for me. I may have ruled out expansive too quickly since it boosts the work boat too (I am not used to all the changes yet). Though I don't know for you but I am not for playing always the same stuff, even if it's the superior smile

I can get on board Carthage or Rome -- played neither before in RtR. Of the two I think I find Carthage more fun while Rome is probably better, or at least more explored. I'd be down to pick Carthage (or Rome if Commodore takes Carthage somehow) and then see which leader is available when the pick returns. Carthage doesn't have that much oomph, but at least we're flexible for our leader choice. But I think you're right in thinking an early game leader like Charlie and flex our expansion muscles early on.

Completely ignoring the starting techs and picking a civ like Inca is possibly better from a power level perspective, but we're not about that life.

2nd picking Carthage also fits our theme, because that could go straight into a 'now for something completely different moment' -- a comedy of errors.

I kinda like Cathy of Carthage. It's a pangea (with some added islands), so creative could be useful for securing city sites. Cathy can grow real big and we have riverside mines available for settler production. I've also never played (or lurked) with RtR creative.

Another noteworthy trait is ORG for cheap capital lighthouse. We have fish and 2 lakes. IMP/ORG (Julius) + Carthage I wouldn't mind either. It scales much better than the Cathy option, but will have a harder time planting cities in people's faces. We both agree expansive is good, but it's probably time for a change from that. Joao would be ace though. This is a handcrafted map so likely extremely lush. Joao thrives on those. Fortunately I think he will be taken before we get to pick so the temptation won't be there.

I guess my top 3 candidates right now would be Joao, Julius and Cathy. I'd be very surprised if none of those are available on the return. You can also convince me on Justinian (Spi+IMP) if you want spiritual. I'm on the IMP train. Go big, go hard. You snooze you lose.

Commodore picked Japan which means Rome is notably worse and Carthage is notably better. Pick Carthage now IMO.

Also worth noting that there's not a single luxury in the starting BFC, that's rare for RB games. Maybe charismatic is worth getting. We have double 6F tile for quick growth. How are you feeling about Cyrus (CHM/IMP)?

Hello there, picked Carthage, for something different as you say twirl

Commodore picked the Babies.

So your leader pick is Joao for power civing > Cathy for something new > Gaius for civ synergy (JC of Carthage has something, I confess). Justi/Cyrus as potential choices if the situation commands it.

No love for protective... noted wink

I like them all, though maybe Joao is less fun in my mind (no shiny stuff, just efficiency smile). But that's not a rational thing, just a feeling.
Having recently read your pb38 game, I fear we might end up in the same situation with charismatic. It's nice but if we settle three luxuries with our first three settlers, it will be of no use untill l8r (yeah I know cheap HE, lvl 4 knights, etc...). BUt tbh I love Cyrus so I wouldn't mind giving him another chance thumbsup

I like Justinian perso. He is strong all game and spiritual is both fun and adaptable. Not questionning IMP, I am game.
