So... that could have gone better.
First round: Bubbles. I was going for dipping the wand (STAFF?) into the BOTTLE to play with your KIDs in the YARD. COMIC strips use thought bubbles. I saw PAN (side rant: you almost always boil water in a pot, which is a tall metal vessel for the stovetop. Pans are wide and not very tall, used to fry and sautee). I considered MICROSCOPE as a possible bad miss, but NEEDLE never occurred to me. "WELL" was an unforeseen bit of luck.
I should have saved this clue for a later round, like Lewwyn waiting for me to clear Helicopter for him so he could clear a big swath with Gun.
Second round: Airlift. Apparently no one has heard of
the Hump, a massive and prolonged airlift of supplies to China during WWII. I was originally going to clue Rescue for WELL, HIMALAYAS, HELICOPTER; this should have been my first round clue.
Third round: Sherwood. I learned everything I need to know by watching Looney Tunes on Saturday mornings. In Robin Hood Daffy, Daffy says "I'll ho ho and ha ha him, with my trusty quarterSTAFF (actually, it's a buck and a quarter quarterstaff, but I'm not telling *him* that." Also, "Watch, fatso, as I put a clothYARD shaft through his wishbone!" I was hoping for lightning to strike for FACE; things were pretty hopeless at that point anyway.
Well played, Lewwyn and red team!
