magicians everywhere

The AI seems to really love magicians in city garrisons.
(Especially in the capitol city, but it seems that most cities will try to build a wizard tower and then churn out wizards until their garrison is full.)
It's a pretty good tactic.  Anything I attack with is going to get hit with a whole bunch of ranged magic damage before I even get a turn.

As a result I've been feeling like I have to play mostly sorcery, enough to get Magic Immunity.
That doesn't quite trivialize attacking cities, because the magicians can cast Dispel, but it makes it a whole lot easier.

(My current setup: 1 Life, 1 Nature, 7 Sorcery, 1 Chaos, 1 Death, Omnisicience, Specialist, Klackons.)

Is anyone else feeling this way?
How do you attack a city with nine magicians in it, if you don't have Magic Immunity or Invisibility?

How you get so many sorcery books, or did you find them in lairs?  I count you could probably get away with 6 books.  I feel klackons and alchemy go together.  As far as assailing magician cities , it is indeed a challenge.  The worst by far is 9 warlock cities.  Hopefully you can get fire storm or hail storm and soften them up a bit before you go.  There’s also a chaos one I forgot the name at the moment that shoots lightning bolts and is a city enchantment

Life : enough buffs and you don't get hurt, or heroes.
Chaos : Firestorm, Flame Strike
Nature : Resist Elements,Spiders, Elemental Armor, Blizzard
Sorcery : Magic Immunity, Invisibility
Death : Mana Leak, Shadow Demons

Agree with most of serarvys answers except shadow demons seem like they would get owned , maybe night stalker is better?

Klackons 9 stag beetles + resist elements seems like a cheap way to go, but yes you will take attrition your can’t just power through.  I like the challenge though, all too often in the original you had these weakly guarded (even magic fortresses) that I recall you could take relatively easily.

Chaos rift Is another tool at the chaos magicians disposal.

Also:
- Gargoyles (9 def, 9 res, 16 total hp, flight). Gargoyles with resist elements are even better.
- Barbarian gladiators (9+ def vs ranged, 18 total hp), especially with holy armor or resist elements or both. Curses (confusion & black sleep) may be a problem without resist magic.
- As usual, hero(es) with good defensive artifacts. You are talking about rare spells (MI, Invi), at this time you should have some decent artifacts from nodes and lairs.
