I hope you all don't mind me saying that I feel that was certainly true for the lurkers this time around  popcorn . I do appreciate the full post-game analysis - it's probably easier to learn from the times it goes wrong than when it runs smoothly!

SALOON
UNICORN
NOVEL
FIGHTER

I hate to rub salt in the wound, but my first thought on "twopence" was "NOVEL" - the phrase "tuppeny novel" sprang to mind. Now, a bit of research suggest that this was a false memory: the actual phrase is "twopenny library"; however the link is still there at one remove.

Not much to say on my part. This was a hard board for both sides, but with two gift words it was a lot easier for me (especially with the always problematic Loch Ness out of the way). After decades of wandering in the wilderness, the team finally came around to my intended three words for Carwash (every pre-Covid summer weekend here seemed to have some group putting on a car wash as a fund raiser). Lewwyn was exactly right on the last clue: it was meant to be Raven 1, with a +2. I thought about Wildlife 2 or Mascot 3, but those both risked pulling in Unicorn. With the team seemingly on the right track for Carwash, I just needed to make sure they got the other word of the remaining three.

Good game.

First one is always the hardest thrawn. You learn you have to be more simple and elegant and careful than you think you need to be.

Blue has won Codenames 34? Shall we make a thread for 35?

Agreed! What helped me the most was something T-hawk said a while ago: most of the time, you don't need a finely calibrated clue that precisely links the words you have, but rather a general concept that will suggest the right words, even if there isn't a direct connection. i.e.: Broadcast 3 would probably have worked for SUB/BAT/TOWER on the last board because the concept was clear, even if the links were a little fuzzy.

Very much up for #35!

I wanted to clue Basement 3 for that Sub + Bat + Tower, except it would have run into Skyscraper.

It's a lot harder than it looks from the sidelines. Once things go wrong, it's very hard to recover.
