No way is this a clue for CARD/KING/QUEEN. There are so many more obvious ways to do that.
My first thought was in fact HOLLYWOOD. Movies can flop. Then I liked BACK. You flop on your BACK. From reading spoilers, CRASH is good. A flop is a car crash, or a crash and burn. GROUND also works. Other possibilities: The LEAD in a film can be a flop. A WAR can also be a flop. WHALEs can flop, though I would say they thrash. I don't really think of flop as onomatopoeia - it's the act of failing or falling down, not the noise you make - so I'm not keen on SOUND. I would point to HOLLYWOOD -> CRASH -> BACK.
I'm not convinced we should give up on CARD - that was the first thing to occur to both El Grillo and JR4. It's a little weakened by the apparent fact that a flop is cards, plural, but I think Commodore could be going for CARD but not KING or QUEEN.
I don't like CRASH. Flop to me means a failure or landing, but not really a violent one. My vote: HOLLYWOOD, GROUND, CARD, but BACK is a close fourth. |
