An unsuccessful HOLLYWOOD movie is called a flop.
The Fosbury Flop is a high jumping technique where you land on your BACK.
Flop is something of an onomatopoeia, so SOUND?
A beached WHALE will flop around.
Is flop a term in CARD playing? I have a vague sense it is, but can't cite an example.
Flopsy, Mopsy, and Peter Cottontail dug under Farmer McGregor's FENCE.
I think it's called a flop when a soccer player falls to the GROUND in simulated agony?

Definitely HOLLYWOOD; I don't think any of the others is nearly as strong. I like GROUND and SOUND at this moment, but await the opinions of the rest of the team.

Hmm... I think this is meant to be read as a poker reference to CARD KING QUEEN, and not the SOUND of someone CRASHing to the GROUND.

Getting a KING or QUEEN on the flop in poker could be good. And poker is obviously a CARD game.

I`d go CARD - KING - QUEEN.

Commodore might want to another meaning of flop but the poker words seem clearly strongest here.

@DaveV:

Hollywood has indeed produced a number of flops. I won`t object to HOLLYWOOD. But CARD, KING and QUEEN can hardly be worse than grey and are all closely related to poker. Hmm, this is kind of tricky.

@JR4 and El Grillo:

Bear with me, since I've never watched poker on TV, though I've played a bit in real life. Is the flop the last card in seven card stud or something?

Why not poker, solitaire, or face, if you're going for KING, QUEEN, CARD? Maybe Commodore is as ignorant as I am?

In poker, the first three cards (common for all players) flipped at once are called the flop. I do agree that there is a strong argument for HOLLYWOOD as CARD, KING and QUEEN could easily be clued by some other card-related word.

I suppose Poker 3 would've likely been able to safely pick up CARD-KING-QUEEN, so maybe we're actually looking for HOLLYWOOD-GROUND-???

No way is this a clue for CARD/KING/QUEEN. There are so many more obvious ways to do that.

My first thought was in fact HOLLYWOOD. Movies can flop.
Then I liked BACK. You flop on your BACK.
From reading spoilers, CRASH is good. A flop is a car crash, or a crash and burn.
GROUND also works.

Other possibilities:
The LEAD in a film can be a flop.
A WAR can also be a flop.
WHALEs can flop, though I would say they thrash.

I don't really think of flop as onomatopoeia - it's the act of failing or falling down, not the noise you make - so I'm not keen on SOUND.

I would point to HOLLYWOOD -> CRASH -> BACK.

I'm not convinced we should give up on CARD - that was the first thing to occur to both El Grillo and JR4. It's a little weakened by the apparent fact that a flop is cards, plural, but I think Commodore could be going for CARD but not KING or QUEEN.

I don't like CRASH. Flop to me means a failure or landing, but not really a violent one.

My vote: HOLLYWOOD, GROUND, CARD, but BACK is a close fourth.
