Okay, so:

CLUB/JAM hadn't occurred to me at all.  I have no idea how strong you feel those are -- that sort of music appreciation isn't in my knowledge.

RING is much stronger than LINK if you ask me.  Metal chains can rattle and clink and clank, but not clang, which implies a sound made by a hollow metal object like a bell or pan.

I agree that RING is strong; I was thinking about it too narrowly. Since we all rated it highly:

Eh, could be worse. I think that leaves us with POUND/JAM as the strongest remaining options? They'd be my picks on an unlimited clue, starting with POUND if we only have the +1.

Time for sure
After that I like Link as in A Link to the Past

I also favor the Zelda: Link to the Past over Back, personally.
If only you and me and dead people know hex, then only deaf people know hex.

I write RPG adventures, and blog about it, check it out.

  • Are we going to start the fight about whether Gotham is NEW YORK or Chicago?  I don't think the latter is on the Codenames list though.
  • And yes, it has a lot of SKYSCRAPERs, either way.
  • Doesn't a cape billow like a CLOAK?  Eh.
  • Going to a completely different kind of Batman and a completely different kind of fandom, this might be a reference to Tolkien's fighting in the Battle of the Somme in FRANCE in World War I and people looking for the real-life inspiration of Samwise Gamgee.  (I would sit down and read that book, but I don't have it unpacked yet.)  But I also don't think this is what thrawn meant.
  • I can't come up with any case where Batman ever uses a CLUB as a weapon.   Not my major fandom, but I have a hard time seeing him use something that, well, crude.
