Caster of Magic Release thread : latest version 6.06!

I note in the manual that it says actually under famous that fame no longer has any bearing on the chance for heroes to offer to show up, so this table clearly no longer applies https://masterofmagic.fandom.com/wiki/Fame#Hero_offers

Is there a table like this or a formula hidden in the manual somewhere? I couldn't find it in http://seravy.x10.mx/CasterofMagic/CASTEROFMAGIC.HTML

It's not in the manual but might be in the changelog.
It's basically a fixed chance depending on your empty hero slots, and no other variables. The only way to get more offers is by not hiring other heroes until you get the one(s) you want.
For the first two slots the chance is 1 in 6 per turn. The next one is probably one in 12, further slots maybe one in 24 or higher. The exact numbers are in the changelog.

Found it:

5.31

-Chance for heroes to show up for a human player no longer depends on fame and is instead a preset 1/6, 1/12, 1/36, 1/48, 1/60, 1/90 chance depending on the amount of hero slots already in use. Fame is used to increase the quality of offers instead. (AI chance to hire is roughly unchanged .)

edit2:

So, it is smoothed out. And going from 1hero to 2heroes has a penalty but the penalty going from 2heroes to 3heroes is much bigger, all the other penalties are smooth.... so the biggest penalty is accepting a 3rd hero.

Any idea how this math will work in caster of magic 2?

That was the initial implementation but the numbers were adjusted in a later update as far as I remember.

CoM II has this right now : (6,12,36,48,48,48)
So there is a good chance CoM I uses these as well.

Yep! 5.7

-Increased the chance of hero offers to show up for wizards with 4 or 5 heroes. The chance is now 1/48 instead of 1/60 or 1/90, making the chance equal to wizards who have 3 heroes.

Sorry I'm so confused by this, maybe you should add these hero recruitment chance odds in the hero section of the manual rather than dispersed through the changelogs?

I went 5/5 nature/death to test this. I chose my guaranteed uncommon to be transmute instead of nature's cures. I figured, f it, I'll probably find nature's cures somewhere right?

No opponents have any death or nature books, at all, and I've researched all my uncommon spells and didn't get nature's cures. So, my bad. Heh. This combination is also, like, extremely unsynergistic without nature's cures. heh.

I am and have been playing ver 5.26 for the last month or so. (it's winter time now, and I keep coming back to MoM when computer gaming season begins)) I am using DDS Box in Linux and I am wondering if there is a strictly DOS based install that I can download that, like the game itself, does not require windows in any way, shape or form?

I have spent the last couple days trying to get the new version to install using WINE and it sucks, I can't play version 6.xx because it just won't install. (I get "out of range" errors when I try to install using WINE) If I pay for 6.xx why can't I get a version that will install from a DOSBOX prompt without the need for any win32 emulators? I got 5.26 to work, and still play it, but after finding +6 Sword of Stoning over and over again, I figure it is time to go to version 6.0x. But I am not going to pay for squat for it if I can't get it to install from a DOSBOX prompt in linux.

I also want to lknow if CoM 6.x has a save game editor included. with 5.26 I can still use momedit2 to cheat, create custom starting scenarios, etc. (very limited editing functionality compared to the original MoM 1.31 save games, but one can still change things like money, spells, mana)

If I can find a relatively reliable and easy way to go to 6.xx from a DOSBOX prompt in linux I will shell out the $$ and buy it immediately. But from what I an gathering so far, it seems that 6.05 is not an option for me because I am a Linux user. :-( I really want to pay you for 6.05 because I find your efforts to be amazing, but I am reading some pretty bad horror stories about refunds, no support, etc)

That all being said, I still enjoy playing Caster ver 5.26, even though I find at least a dozen +6 Swords of Stoning when playing on huge maps.

Sadly, you need to complain to Slitherine about installer issues.
The only advice I can give is, install on a Windows computer if you have access to any, then copy the files onto your DOS or UNIX filesystem after they were already installed. The game itself is portable so you can move the files and they work without any installation required.

You can find a save game editor on the forum, ILSE's tweaker.

Thanks for your prompt reply. I got the editor, buuut, I can't even get it to run ATM..

The thing is, this (ver 6.xx) issue might be the ONE thing that could force me to taint my system with Windows once again. I think I have a Windows 7 CD around here somewhere.

I really want to upgrade to version 6.xx. But for now Caster 5.26 is fine for me...I can't tell you how much I appreciate a competent AI. I have had to seriously cheat on "expert" in order to get through  the mid and late game just so I can get a feel for the AI in those stages of the game.

The old cheese has clearly been moved..wink

Yes, it's an issue, that suddenly windows is a requirement. So, this a Slitherine requirement, and just because of the installer? Is there any chance to have a DOS or Linux version of the game in the future again?

I would be willing to contribute, money and time. It's just that I know MoM from my childhood, and I love Seravy's work now so much. And now, to force windows might just kill the idea ... . It is like Tleilaxu Ghola says - CoM could be the only reason in the world to use it. Still not sure though, did not use windows for years and I might skip it ... But if it like this for us, there will be more people.

Please tell if there is anything we might try to do. That I myself or my company contacts Slitherine, that we support with programmers and support. Anything. Thanks!
Flexibility regarding OS will just ensure a better future for the MoM/CoM world smile

[EDIT] I could get it run last time in March without windows and played the version since then. Steam Proton/Soldier/wine did not work, but somehow I could configure a different wine prefix so it performed the installs in the command line. Afterwards I used DOSBOX without steam. I tried, but I did not achieve that proton starts MoM properly. The version was a bit broken at first, but after several tries it worked. However, I'd rather prefer to do what it takes so everybody can play on linux. Just now I tried to follow the same steps, but I got an install that does not start. With 1.5.2+Installer something must have changed.
