I got my 750$ PC from Newegg. It runs basically everything at close to max settings outside of the new AAA games. For an extra 50-100$ i would probably have upgraded the graphics one more notch or grabbed another 1tb SSD

In this game that's going to help us because he's going to go to the negotiating table with twitchy eyes and slightly too wide a grin and terrify the neighbors into favorable border agreements, one-sided tech deals and staggered NAPs."

In my experience, Newegg's best sales occur around mid-January.

So...I'm building a new PC and it's all ordered minus the graphics card. I'll wait until later on the the year or the new year sales to grab something. My current pc had the graphics card stop working, shame but at least the rest of the parts work. The new processor is a 12600k so I will be using the integrated graphics for the meantime (UHD770)
I am looking at using Linux, just going with Ubuntu. I've used Ubuntu 15 years ago when I was at uni but otherwise this is relatively new as that involved logging into a pc and not installing from scratch.
I've used Google and looked at various guides. I'll still have my phone and old PC to trouble shoot with. Not like building a PC back in the late nineties.
My question to the lurkerati and posters of RB is more...prosaic. is there anything you guys think I should be aware of wrt using Steam, and more specifically civ 6 on Linux? Any other generic advice regarding Linux is also welcome.

From your post I guess you want to run only Ubuntu on your system and not install Windows on another partition?
I have no experience with Steam (because I don't buy my games there) and Civ 6 (never played it). But I know that many games on GoG also do support Linux.
As for general advice: What partition sizes do you plan for your partitions?

I was intending to just use a straightforward plan: a 2TB NVME with a single partition plus separate 2TH HDD as backup for generic files (documents, photos, music etc).
I am running Windows 7 on my current PC. The only part I was intending to take from it was a single HDD otherwise it would be kept as a backup (with 1TB SSD with the windows install left in situ). Not that stable but good enough. It also has another 250GB SSD.
Would you suggest something different? It isn't an issue to leave the HDD where it is and get another one for the new build.

So your plan is a 2TB for the root partition and a 2TB for the home partition?

Essentially yes. I'm not seriously considering partitioning the NVME drive to create two partitions with one as backup. Do you think this is foolhardy?
I would love to have a NAS but the reality is that the old PC will suffice plus cloud storage, an old 320GB external HDD and an encrypted 128GB USB drive for more important documents. Perhaps I could play around with the 250GB SSD in the future actually...not thought of that....

2TB for a root partition sounds a bit too large for my taste. Maybe make it only 1TB and leave the rest unpartitioned. Then you can use that 1TB for anything else whenever the need arises.

One piece of advice to anyone now, just don't cheap out and buy a HDD unless you are putting it into a network storage device. Just spend the small amount of extra money on an SDD for bulk storage. The amount of times during general use I've had a small hang is mildly annoying.
