Inside the Republican party you have Trumpists (Trump and the crazies) vs Conservatives (Just regular evil), then inside the Democratic party you have Progressives (Bernie bros) vs Conservatives (Change nothing but act civil).

Nah. But...
OED Wrote:e·vil - /ˈēvəl/ having a harmful effect on people; morally bad
I'll give you many of their policies are morally bad and harmful, ergo evil. That's true of just about every politician, but it's more true about social conservatives.

I'm also firmly with Democrats until Republicans can say the words "Joe Biden won the 2020 election" and not side step it or qualify it. Undermining faith in democracy definitely = bad.

I'm curious, what does it actualy mean to "register as a democrat" (or republican)? Is that part of your official record in the voter register? What is it good for, is it relevant for primaries? What else?

In some states (like mine, Ohio), only registered Democrats can vote in the Democratic primary and vice versa. Registered Independents can only vote in the primary for "independent" offices (i.e. judges), and ballot issues like school taxes and legalization of marijuana. Other states have "open" primaries where you can ask for either a Democratic or Republican ballot, regardless of party affiliation.
I remain registered as Republican, despite my current disenchantment with the party, because my area is so deep red that the Republican primary *is* the election (many local offices end up with a Republican running unopposed). It also means I receive regular fundraising letters from my good friend Donald Trump. They are usually disguised as polls, with such informative questions as "I support Donald Trump: A. 100% B. 1000% C. Infinity."

Yes, I had to login to registertovoteflorida.gov and update my party affiliation from "Independent" to "Democrat". Florida is a closed primary state, so the only practical change I am aware of is eligibility to vote in the Democratic primary. I fear spam, but superdeath needs a job so...

It's a bit alarming that even after the attack on the Capitol, a large part of the Republican party seems to have no intention of distancing themselves from Trump, the lies and the conspiracy theories:

It's getting worse very very quickly - basically, they've decided they're all-in with the insurrectionist movement and Trump, and how dare you go against conservatives for their actions *three weeks ago*. They're not that far away from arguing that January 6th was a good thing, a just thing. Give it another month.
When's the last time any member of party leadership took a trip to meet with a former President only a week after their term ended?

What else would you expect to happen? When all you ever get is "evil" screamed at you ever louder, you don't buckle under to the screaming and purging, you fight back harder. And Trump is still the closest thing of any to a leader of that fight.
I'd be happy to sign on with a Reagan or even Obama style great communicator, but there isn't any anywhere. Both sides now communicate only to their base, as they've learned that the most effective tactic is to whip up the frenzy against the worst extremists of the opposition.
Bad news drives out good, like bad money drives out good. Humans have proven they respond most to inflammatory and inciteful discourse, not to reasoned discussion and consensus. Humans are driven by fear, and the news and social media profit by weaponizing that. This is never getting fixed as long as the media channels profit by turning everyone against each other.
