Pretty sure it's on game pass if you have game pass. My impressions from what I've seen on streams - gameplay is good if you like action-style button-mashing combat, main story is fine, side content (e.g. social links) is not engaging at all (at least I didn't find it engaging)

Picked up the new rogue-lite FPS, Gunfire Reborn on Steam sale for $15. It just went 1.0 from early access last week. Pretty replayable game. It has up to 4-player online co-op. I was a console gamer, so I use a controller for FPS, and it actually handles really nicely on a controller. There are five playable characters with enough variety to keep it interesting in terms of gameplay style, a ton of weapons with varied effects and play patterns, and a deep skill tree to give you that slow progression forward that makes the genre addictive.
If anyone else picks up a copy and wants to try some online co-op, let me know. Otherwise, still just playing Storybook Brawl since Forza Horizon 5 won't work with my pedal set.
Completed: SG2-Wonders or Else!; SG3-Monarch Can't Hold Me; WW3-Surviving Wolf; PBEM3-Replacement for Timmy of Khmer; PBEM11-Screwed Up Huayna Capac of Zulu; PBEM19-GES, Roland & Friends (Mansa of Egypt); SG4-Immortality Scares Me
Been playing the Halo bundle on Steam in advance of Infinite releasing this week; I had played 1-3 back in college around 15 years ago, but forgotten most of the details. Very impressed with how well the games have held up, and particularly with the fidelity of the graphics for the Halo 2 remaster. The bundle is steal if purchased on sale, it's five high quality games for like 20 bucks.
Mouse- I have a 360 controller and originally played through the core trilogy with one, but I find the K&M combo makes the combat both more enjoyable and more reasonable when disabling aim assist. Vehicle sections suffer a little though, lots of crashing into stuff.
I've been playing Universal Paperclips this month: https://www.decisionproblem.com/paperclips/index2.html
It's one of those incremental clicker browser games, but quite possibly the best of the genre. It's apparently somewhat well known in the genre for a few years, but I only heard of it just now on seeing a reference on another forum. It's actually quite solid as a game, with a ton of subsystems and strategies, with way more ways of implementing and manipulating exponential numbers than I ever imagined. It's got very good pacing with always something new to do every few minutes. And importantly, it's not a silly open-ended sandbox, but it leads up to a defined end goal, such that speedrunning it is a thing to do. (I'm not recording or writing anything for it myself; there's already some really good runs on youtube.)
I'm currently playing Inscryption, which is a relatively new game that kind of defies description. It is loosely a rogue-lite-ish card game based on the Slay the Spire model, only the card game is barely the game at all. You are trapped in some sort of horrific cabin playing this card game against some sort of malevolent person/force. And you can step away from the table, and then the game kind of morphs into the escape room genre, where you have to explore and solve puzzles which unlocks cards and items for the card game. Some of the cards talk to you, either giving you back story or making fun of your choices. I suspect ultimately the goal will be to escape the cabin, but that is just a guess. I'm not that far into it.
I suspect the game is going to go in all kinds of weird directions. It seems to be both of it's genres and poking fun at it's genres. I picked it up for $6 right now on Epic Games even though it just came out and is priced at $16 on Steam sale. Very unique game that would probably appeal to lots of folks around here.

I just finished Death's Door, which I picked up for $4.99 on sale at Epic. It's a new old-school Zelda, Metroidvania type game from an isometric perspective. You play as a small crow who is a reaper of souls and has to end the lives of a few bosses who have essentially cheated death for too long. You explore their domains with boss-specific dungeons. The game has an overall melancholy vibe and gorgeous art style. When you kill a boss, there is a funeral with a eulogy for the boss, describing their history and positive qualities. It's a nice conceit, refusing to completely villainize those you are in opposition too. I found it affecting each time. The game is fun and does not overstay it's welcome, with a roughly 10-12 hour run time. There are some collectibles and a secret ending which push that out closer to 20 hours if you're a completionist. The game was well worth what I paid for it.

I love Slay the Spire (review) so I'm sure this would be my kind of jam, too. This post reminded me that Epic Games is still running their holiday sale, so I went ahead and picked it up for $6 too. Thanks for the reminder! |
