Dig WELLs in the ground
Plant SPIKEs in the ground

Pretty confident about those.

BUGs crawl around in the dirt/ground?
A DWARF is closer to the ground?
Build a POOL in the ground?
Wear SOCKs on the cold ground?
Not sure if PIN/BANK have an electrical ground connection.

I feel very good about these:
The KIWI is a flightless bird living on the ground
Of course a WELL pumps/gets water out of the ground
A lot of BUGs call their home the ground
You need to dig a hole in the ground for a POOL
Similar to kiwi, CHICKs are also flightless birds on the ground

These could connect with ground, but I'm less enthusiastic about them:
Most games with BALLs are played on the ground
SPIKEs can stick out of the ground
DWARFes live underground, but I feel less good about that as they normally live under mountains.
OLIVEs and ORANGEs grow on trees which in turn grow out of the ground

THE words I have found in no particular order are: BOARD as in you can walk on them or like a BOARDwalk; WELL because, duh; SPIKE for those coming out of the ground; DWARF for the common thing of them often being miners; POOL as in the body of water; BANK as in the part of the river; and CANADA as being not just a country, but a big one.
