the forested wheat is interesting -- at what point do you chop it?

[Image: huhu.gif] I had a plan once upon a time, but I've forgotten. Presumably, I chop it second? You can see my "r1" and "r2" signs below:

These are where the worker roads next. I think I then chop the r2 tile and afterwards the wheat. Not sure though. It's been a long time since I've thought about the game. (Downside of lack of early scouting + 48hr turn timer.)

I'm very pleased to see the deer. In the wider world, someone (Shade) landed Stonehenge. Too bad. wink

There is a not insignificant chance that our warrior dies next turn, which would be disastrous:

But if he survives, he'll have enough XP for a promotion.

The discovery of that deer next to the gems gave me a thought about how this map was designed:

If this is true, I need to try to steal that silver. Very difficult since I would need both Animal Husbandry and a unit better than a warrior for defense. We shall see.

"Need" seems like a strong word. I have no map knowledge, but to my eye that seems like a pre defined area up there. It would seem boring to me to put predefined areas in all directions, so maybe the areas to grab are actually on the other continent? Again pure speculation.

Edit: side note: I of course am not accusing you of seeing a resource, deciding you must have it, and then focusing on it to the exclusion of everything else.  neenerneener

Pre-defined areas are super bad for Imp players: if I can fill my area up quicker, I have to turn that into an advantage with earlier infrastructure or units. All the infrastructure in the world won't catch me up to Fin & Org players, so I'd have to gain an advantage with units, and if war is already in the cards, no sense giving others their pre-defined area if I can help it.

(Because the southern land has the same three ice tiles as the northern one, I do suspect that the entire immediate area has been divvied up by the map-makers.)

All the same, I doubt I can actually steal that silver. It's pretty far away, and I think its rightful owner is Miguelito, who doesn't often sleep on the job. frown

One of these days people are going to stop contesting resources when they're clearly in my hemisphere!  Argh

Edit: Thinking more along your lines of "where is the contested land?", I wonder if everyone is in roughly mirrored rings around a center area. In other words, we have to push through the unappealing north and south to get somewhere better. I should count up the number of tiles I've seen and check how that compares to the expected tiles per player.

100% agree. You either have to turn land into tech or tech into land and clearly you have to choose land into tech.

Assuming* you are right about a 2nd pre defined area. Assuming everyone gets 2 pre defined areas you should therefore steal land from someone who is focusing on their other predefined area and hope someone doesn't do the same to the area you are ignoring to do so.

This makes sense but is also uncomfortably uncontrollable.

Just to get your wording right... "pre-defined areas " are the spots you are "supposed" to settle first?
In StarCraft they called it "natural" because its just the place you normally expand into.
Or do you mean something different? Like mapmaking... patches of a few tiles you can copy around

Also, those icy mountains look suspiciously like "you are not encouraged to move any further"... lol
Not exactly a huge area to expand.

Precisely. The idea is that the map makers designed an area for everyone to peacefully expand into before they come into conflict.

The warrior survived both wolves with only 1 hit taken:

I can promote, but I'll try to keep it in reserve for as long as I can.

Back when the game was first beginning, I ran some numbers:
(March 12th, 2022, 12:19)naufragar Wrote: There are 2695 land tiles. There are 18 players, so there's 150 tiles per player. My island is 14 tiles.

My very, very rough estimate suggests that there's about 50 tiles on my "half" of the northern spar. I assume another 50 on the southern. So... not too much other land up for grabs... But luckily, we can have a Combat 1 warrior. wink

I have a confession to make. I stopped fiddling with my sandbox at turn 20, and now I have no idea how I got to where I am.

I keep trying to replicate my plan, and I can't make it work... What magic did I weave one month ago?

Well, I guess we're doing it live. I moved the warrior 1S so that it would prevent barb spawns on the southernmost tiles. Next turn, I discover Bronze Working and can land my settler. I think I put it on the un-forested plains tile.

And, yes, because I no longer have an accurate sandbox, I'm just gonna have to guess on stuff from here on out. smoke

Edit: Oh, naufragar, you're so clever, reporting exactly the crucial micro move even if its importance wasn't readily apparent:

Even though working the furs would cut our research time on Sailing down a turn, we keep working the forested wheat. We'll switch to the furs next turn and still complete Sailing by the end of turn 23. Working the forested wheat enables us to grow earlier and produce a slightly faster settler.

Turns out, staying on the wheat on t21 saves us exactly a turn on the settler. I had forgotten.
