While I really like the idea of Champions, as they are at the moment, I consider them almost worthless to be used.
Here’s my experience with Champions –
Research & spend the mana to summon the champion.
Champion is super weak at 0 Exp for the stage of the game you get them.
Place a whole bunch of buffs on the Champion so he has a chance to survive.
Go into combat with Champion.
Champion gets hit with dispel magic. Buffs go bye-bye, everything that can, targets and attacks Champion. Champion dies.
What the above means, is that the AI considers Heroes and Champions a serious threat and they should be taken out as soon as possible. Heroes can be found during the earlier stages of the game and have a chance to level up, giving them a better chance at surviving during the late mid to ending of the game. Champions come in as babies in the mid to late mid game and have very little chance to survive.
Possible fix which I think would work without unbalancing the game –
Champions start with 180 EXP (Level 4). This would give the champion +4 health, +2 resistance, and +1 defense, helping him stay alive. Champions should be champions and have a bit of exp showing their champion status, not new-born babies.
