Maybe a super buff, like heroism/discipline for a couple swordsmen, conquer easy lairs and neutrals first, bootstrap. A buffed halfling swordsman is hardly killable, but trolls regenerate. Since they are only four, buffing is probably not the most efficient strat but still

Trolls regenerate, therefore as long as you win, your dead units will come back alive.
This suggests that a Life strategy might be useful, even though I don't remember if your unit enchantments are wiped out on death or not.

No builder's hall and sages guild means less money and research... Low resistance too....

Since not losing is the critical point, Sorcery can be useful. One invisible or flying or magic immune unit, and you fail to lose, and get all your units back. I'd put Sorcery ahead of Life for trolls. Chaos not so useful buff-wise, since your units have few figures. Nature's main strength is summons, and that displaces your regenerating trolls.

Did 9 sorcery books, astrologer and omniscient. Let's see what happens...
Should have thought about the unrest with other races though...

Monoblue probably? Troll Mages are pretty much the best recruitable unit the entire game, but their only problem is not-high-enough resistance, which Sorcery has an answer for - Reinforce Magic. It also gives additional magical ranged damage. You could probably even take Warlord for instant War College Elites. Get one city making them asap as you don't even need Tree of Knowledge for Wizard Guild.

"as long as you dont lose" is not accurate in every circumstance; if all units retreat exhausted and you are the attacker, those units that have been lost do not come back.

This turned out pretty good
Reinforce Magic and Focus Magic made the magicians great. Aura of Majesty kept everyone friendly - I actually started the first war. It was against someone that was in war with every single wizard and still managed to hold 1-2 place... He was dangerous for the world peace, had to be contained
Invisibility and Flight made the heroes good, then Magic Immunity dealt with doom bolts. And when Power Link kicked in, game over Picked up alchemy and sage master and a green book along the way, which also helped... But all in all, the magicians carried the mid game.
