Turn 50:
First of all, an event.
Strange one this, a similar moral question is contained in the backstory for Hyborem: the Infernal leader. He has a worldspell called Hyborem’s Whisper which allows the player to capture any one city on the map so long as it has the Ashen Veil religion in it.
The idea behind it: is that Hyborem taunts the leader owning that city with unanswerable moral dilemnas until they go mad/give him the city.
In this one, it’s a case of kill 1 life by action, or 5 by inaction.
I chose the inaction, because I believe the game considers it the ‘gooder’ thing to do.
But the unanimous opinion seems to be that this event does nothing. It’s meant to lead into more events later, but doesn’t.

So, Vanilla Ice.
The Svartalfar scout is gone, replaced by an uninjured lizardman. Sareln later said that the scout escaped through the forest, using his 2 movement elf bonus.
Vanilla Ice has no such option, and is blocked off by desert, which costs 2 movement.
Two choices, die, or take a shortcut.
I took the shortcut.
The upshot is that I had to declare war on Sareln.
Fired off an apology message:

Hi Sareln,
I'm very sorry about the lizardmen breaking off to attack your capital.
That was neither planned nor intended, my sincere apologies.
Secondly, I don't know if your scout managed to escape, but this turn I found the location it was standing in replaced by an uninjured lizardman.
The only direction my unit could flee was through your borders, which unfortunately meant declaring a (I really hope) temporary war.
Rather than hold up the game to ask permission I've simply done it.
The scout unit moved 1 tile into your borders and has now exited, he has no plans to return.
Maybe he can take that new lizardman with him.
I'll gladly be offering peace again as soon as I can, I hope you'll accept.
Kind Regards,
Pb, JugglingTooManyObjects Boy-King
Unfortunately I think I was a touch too slow sending it off, and he got the turn before he got my message.
His reply was none too pleased:

Better to ask forgiveness than permission I suppose? Kindly don't do
that again or I might actually get annoyed :D. It's probably for the
best that Vanilla Ice exited immediately, the grounds surrounding my
capital are certainly quite dangerous and easy experience would go a
long way in helping push back the barbarian menace - he would have
certainly been a tempting snack for my forces. Your scout will find
it a slow trek home, as the land between Selrahc and I is filled with
hills, but I wish you well and will re-sign peace when my turn comes
around.
Thank you for asking after my scout, he is doing quite well. Since I
am at the end of the turn order, I get to watch barbarian moves which
is a huge perk at this stage of the game. He continues southward on
his mission to contact the Hippus and Calabim.
-Sareln-
Sorry, but Sareln continues to fall short at the diplo.
He has a right to be unhappy, both for the extra two lizardmen I brought him, and the unasked for war. However I am busy, and that wasn’t just a sneaky manoeuvre, the ‘not asking for permission’ part. We missed a turn yesterday, I didn’t want to miss another one today.
So he has a right to slap my hand a bit, but Sareln, when you come to read this, you should have been making a decision here.
Either you don’t want me as an ally, in which case, don’t hold back, throw insults or at best just give one word replies.
Or, you do want me as an ally, in which case
don’t include the bolded part in that message.
It’s just threat after threat after threat, and doesn’t come across well, smiley or no smiley.
As far as I’m concerned, diplo is now sealed.
So long as I can point Selrahc at Sareln, there’s no chance of the Kuriotates aiding the Svartalfar.
I just hope I haven’t screwed up too much by putting Selrahc off.
I do still think it was necessary.
Moving on.
Nothing happening at Kwythellar, except that it grew to size 7, now the biggest city, and the Sage Council finishes next turn.
Demographics:
- Amusingly, Selrahc has renamed his cities to ‘Silent Night’ and ‘Jingle Bells’ now.
Maybe we will have a Santa’s grotto after all!
- Bob’s GNP increased by another 1 to 22.
You guys certainly seem to be getting excited by something over at the lurker thread.
