The report
No climbing back from far behind to win this time as :
1. I didn't fall behind to start with, I was relatively quickly in the leader pack.
2. but I didn't manage to finish first either.
Vicky, unmolested during all the game (and protected by Cesar from me), launched first in 1972.
(No contest as I had chosen another path in the end end was expecting both Apollo and Internet in 1974).

Your Vicky launched early! (One turn behind my runaway Mao's original Launch Date ETA).
You had some good successes in there, though.
Certainly you also caught some tough breaks, including so many Artists. (Did you use any for Golden Age, though? I didn't see where you did.)
Everybody who fought Rome had such a different experience than me! I had Rome in my pocket from BC times, being the first converted to the Faith.

No, no golden Age, as the first non Artist was a scientist that I thought was better as an academy in Tenochtitlan, the next one was far away and I had used the 'saved' artist for a culture bomb.
Except the academy and the bomb, all were turn into tech.
Ironically, my first intention (which did not last any longer than after founding the second city) was to try for a culture win. But settling any good city #2 and #3 was far too late in the game to even dream of that victory).

You'd be surprised. Culture wins are about making cities with high commerce and high production. Not how I would have preferred it, but I'm not sure I really have a better answer, either. Civ only really has two thrusts: economic growth and military might. Sid's original two victory conditions of Space and Conquest are still all that the game readily supports. The other victories are still peripheral, and it is tough thing indeed to try to overcome that.

Actually, given your start, Sirian, I'd bet a cultural win for you may have been viable. The tricky part is getting all the religions for all the cathedrals, and you had them domestically!
Tenochitlan would have been shy of the kind of commerce needed for mega-culture, but the early wonders (with doubling) would make up for that. The southeast city site (by the sheep) would support Legendary commerce/culture, and the corn site to the east could handle the other.

I didn't get the Corn site to the east. However, The City That Rome Rejected could have done it on production alone. So yeah, I could have done it. Maybe.
By the way, I've yet to win by Culture (on anything resembling the current cultural victory, at least). The fact that it IS just a production/cash thing, plus multipliers, takes a lot of the shine off for me. I just don't see it as a mainstream option, nor a particularly compelling one. You have to commit everything to it, too: it's all or nothing.

Actually, its very difficult to do it with production, absent the culture-doubling of early wonders that usually is only available in the capital. You could also conceivably do it with a few artist super-specs, but there are better options.
I went for the culture victory in GOTM-2 (you can see my, also threadbare, report in the Civfanatics forum), and got it in 1842. I'm surprised you haven't tried it, I had a ball. It's every bit as stimulating as a well-conceived space run like yours here.
Its also not necessarily all-or-nothing. You can just take all that commerce that would be researching space techs and convert it into culture spending, while building cathedrals in your legendary cities. I don't bother much with Great Artists (they only save the equivalent of four turns of culture in a tricked-out legendary city).
