Points well made Ref. Another thing to keep in mind, is that there are various kinds of risks, and IIRC humans respond differently when the risk is undertaken to gain something rather than avoid a negative.

Hello, everyone
So, since this seems to be the thread to post about random subjects, I'll use it to announce that I'll probably be moving from Brazil to Canada later this year, as a permanent resident. It's definitely going to be a big change and I'm looking forward to it.
Any advice from our canadian forum members on how to fit in?

East or West coast?
Mostly relax fit here, more of less just like Americans.
Learn to say "Eh"
It gets cold.
No, most of us don't live in igloos
You get to see the Northern Light - Aurora.
I still haven't figure out (how far North) where (Native)Indians turn in to Eskimos
It gets hot in the summer. Lots of wildfires from extreme weather - heat waves. It has became the norm in the last 5 years or so.

A Canadian accent is slightly different than the standard US accent (what you mostly hear on news or radio programs). Most noticeable, the "ou" sound in "out" or "about" is pronounced "ow" by me and my fellow southerners, while Candians tend to pronounce it closer to "oo".
And, as King of Pain noted, "eh" is definitely a common usage. To me, it seemed to come at the end of rhetorical questions: "It's hot today, eh?"
Canada seems to have so far managed to avoid the pervasive gun culture of the US. There are big signs at the border that say (paraphrasing liberally here) "A gun is not a toy or a collectible. Leave it at home, you crazy Yanks!"
You need a passport to travel between the US and Canada. I don't know how much harder it would be with a passport which is not from one of those two countries, but it's very easy for tourists to travel across the border. As a US citizen who's done some work in Canada, I've received a lot of grief at the border; they're very sensitive about US citizens coming north and stealing their jobs.
From reading their newspapers and interacting with a few co-workers, it seems to me that there is less home ownership in Canada than in the US, but more than in Europe.

Some irony, as most North Americans (Canada and US) think the English have a funny accent.
Here is a clip of our Folk Heroes, Bob and Doug McKenzie, who made fun of Canadian culture.

Fortunately! Still, pickup trucks are popular here, not that most people have things to move that require owning one, but often enough you will see a shot gun rack (mostly without a gun) in the cabin.

It was pretty well an open border before 9/11 and all one needed was a driver's license for ID. Border towns in the US did extreme good business from Canadians because US goods are much cheaper. When I used to smoke, cigarettes were $5 a pack but only $1 a pack for the same Canadian cigarette. Gas was around 25% what Canadians pay for.
If you are a visible minority, even if you are Canadian, you will have more problems at the border.

The same thing I do right now. Everything I do has a small risk of killing me and yet I keep doing it.
If you were going to go through life afraid of everything killing you, then you'd never get anything done. Therefore I try, as much as possible, to avoid the really risky stuff and not sweat the rest.

That's a reality for everyone.
You are always worry about your new born that would happen. And it happens more than you think.
That % chance gets higher as you age. In Canada the retirement age was 65, now 67. You only suppose to live maybe 5(?) years after that. That's the statistic average. Otherwise, you will bankrupt the pension system.
If I die in my sleep, I would count myself one of the most fortunate. That's The Best Death™ anyone can ask for.
The best thing about death - You wouldn't know if you died. So No Big Deal™.

Hello, all. First post on the forums. I have a civfanatics account as well, but I found out about this place from Sullla's streams, and it sounded cool, so I decided to register and see what's up with the place.
