There was also a Civforum world map PB which the Dutch won starting on Australia! Not sure any other civ could have pulled that off. (Of course, BTS Fin helped.)
Maybe I will be proven wrong, but early wars are difficult to leverage into a game win even if the war itself is successful. Galley wars almost guanrantee you become irrelevant. That's why consider a powerful galleon UU to be over the line.

Classical start:
* Everyone starts with all techs from the first 3 columns except HBR, + Writing
* Starting units: settler, worker, archer, scout
* Unavailable wonders (hope I didn't miss any): Stonehenge, Oracle, Great Wall, Statue of Zeus
Dutch I would consider borderline, East Indiamen are nerfed a bit in CtH and privateers are available earlier (require Gunpowder instead of Chemistry), so I'd say they're not as unstoppable as in BtS. But they also have a very powerful UB, if the game is still competitive by Steam Power - that is not nerfed in CtH
I'm interested if sequential

I was thinking about the Dike too and that was my main reason more than the EIM to ban them, feels awkward having one civ put a time bomb on the game. The same arguments can be made for the Portuguese. Although Astro is not far from Optics when it is a priority (read: bulb) target.
Also if we started a player signup count we could have vote in spreadsheet.
I would prefer ancient era start, pretty strongly, we could run the first 50 turns pitboss and then swap to sequential if player count is 7 or less
This is what I've read so far (some conditional on game settings)

I'd also strongly prefer sequential. If voting I'd vote for Classical, but I'm more happy to flex on that. Starting simultaneous and converting to sequential after awhile is a fine enough solution. I'd be happy to play with this group of 5 or maybe go to 6 if someone else shows up. 7 feels tight with sequential, but it can work if the players involved are consistent players. At some point we do need to lock in a number so that Commodore can proceed.
I'm pretty ambivalent on Dutch/Portugal. Lean towards leave them be, but I wouldn't fuss one bit if one or both were banned. I guess I just wonder - are they really that much better than some of the other most popular civs in CtH? America is quite popular in CtH, for example, and I wonder if they simply get first-picked if all the spiciest civs are banned? This is the tricky nature of Civ bans. Again though, I'm pretty open to just about anything on the Civ ban front.

I've mostly been staying out of this discussion as I'm not playing, but my 2 cents.
1 cent) Portugal probably map dependent if it should be banned. Therefore should probably be banned so don't have to make a map around it.
2 cent) ban the dutch. I've been wondering forever when someone would bring up dikes as well as their UU. Dutch will either be busted or you will have to rush them. Neither seems fun.
Both of these civs are great civs for big games with random civs. Its just Dutch hasn't gotten rolled and the noob playing Portugal got into a forever war last time it was played.

Ill confirm my choices here for what id like: BAN on china. 75% ban on portugal/dutch. I want an ancient start. The ONLY reason i can see keeping Portugal/dutch in, is the fact that Vikings arent getting (or at least havent been brought up to be) banned. +1 movement imo is pretty nice, and better maces.
"Superdeath seems to have acquired a rep for aggression somehow. In this game that's going to help us because he's going to go to the negotiating table with twitchy eyes and slightly too wide a grin and terrify the neighbors into favorable border agreements, one-sided tech deals and staggered NAPs."

Nah, the war didn't last too long...
Easy to forget I was Portugal in PB74; a bit blink and you miss it.

Will point out that we've had a couple days now without additional signups. Last call here? Think we should decide on a player count for both map and settings purposes.
