mjmd rolled the turn so looks like it was a warpeace. or a war in which a bunch of galleons diedon the first turn, then a peace offer? one can dream lol

well, it looks like i was half-right..... THAT war was phony. however

.....THIS war might be legit???

police state swap is looking like a tell for SOME kind of brewing confrontation. and they finished the kremlin, which is scary except for the fact that they aren't in any civics that allow for production hurrying, and they just used their second GA swap so have no way to get into one. so they probably built it for denial value which is actually pretty good news for us i think.

orgrel has me nervous though... it is PROBABLY just for factories but it could be a tell for a culture attempt, since they already have scimeth and would need to spread religions around to do that. i think it's getting a bit late for them to start something like that though, and frankly they are the favorite for a conventional win condition anyways without having to resort to such things.

anyways i sent ginger fish in response, in both the generic and 25-turn flavor, to at least reassure them that i don't plan to use our ongoing troop buildup offensively against them and am willing to be neutral in a coming war between them and india. i don't think mjmd is such a runaway (yet...?) that we should actively turn on them, though. i'm open to being convinced though, and i certainly see why the timing is fortuitous (after mjmd has dumped a ton of production into factories but before they have profited from it). i just don't think our position can handle the diplomatic blowback of attacking india if we are not in position to conquer them. and as much as i'd like to trust ginger's intentions here, an india war would give them a phenomenal chance to backstab us, which they still probably need to do at SOME point in order to win this game...

sigh. it could be a huge mistake not to take this chance as mjmd is starting to pull ahead of ginger and could conceivably run away with this, especially if they manage to stack mining inc with cereal mills as i am expecting and ginger gets shut out of the strong early corps. idk man, idk. if they invade superdeath or nauf we will obviously have no choice but to intervene..... they probably won't do that until they have massed infantry (or tanks?) good and proper though, and maybe by that point it will be too late for the rest of the world to beat them down. eh. in a close geopolitical call i'm inclined to err on the side of india as part of my still-standing "if i can't win, ginger must not win either" policy, but i'm interested to hear your takes as well

at the very least this offer strongly suggests to me that ginger WAS planning a surprise raze of some indian cities, and our intel might actually have tipped mjmd off at substantial benefit to their win probability..... here's hoping their gratitude for that ends up meaning something

sheesh, this isn't even 2/3 of the 3800 beaker cost of scimeth.... i do still feel that this is correct over saving for a GA though, we can wait on the GA for factory building or frantic wartime production. soooo bye bye monsieur pasteur, hello industrial era smile never mind that every other player has been industrial for ten thousand years via steel tech lol

anyways, india's rejudaiization means the culture-crush twins are yearning to revolt again. we actually almost had a disaster in hungary rush, i had to frantically shift around impi defenders from magnus and GGGA stacking to cover it and had EXACTLY enough units in range to zero out the flip odds. it had one indian revolt way back during the ginger war days, so we cannot leave it with positive odds for even a turn or we risk waking up one morning with one fewer city. CTR i believe is less urgent, thank goodness, since my sims show that a gifted city will not flip back to the gifter a second time (if these sims were wrong for some reason we are, of course, screwed, as we need our impis elsewhere for ginger deterrent)

ok, compare that screenshot to this one from 25 turns ago

in which time we have researched 6 techs (paper, printing press, replaceable parts, rifling, chemistry, and now sci meth), added around 500 to our net GNP, and are back up to #1 in power. is that good as far as economic turnarounds go?

edit: i thought of an alternative to optics research that sucks significantly less if we want warning against a ginger naval attack, btw - we could go for /physics/ instead. that's on the path to tanks so we do need it eventually, and it unlocks electricity research for +1 gold on all windmills, of which we have about ten million..... probably still better to push for assembly line first while ginger/mjmd still has a chance to get tanks before we have infantry, but maybe it actually is possible to get away with investing literally nothing into the naval tech line long-term..... aaaaand then after writing this i remembered physics requires astro anyways, lolllll. in that case i guess i'm probably down to do optics before the infantry push, by the time we hit AL our GNP should be strong enough that it won't represent the 3-turn delay it did on the bio beeline

anyways, if we don't do that, the next step after bio is probably the hilarious steam power tech. yall remember how waaaay back at the beginning of the game i was obsessed with making all our early cities levee-able....

we could also try corporation to take cereal mills, if it's still on the board (and contingent on the 50% shot at a great merchant in wakamotoharu). i don't think that's going to happen though, as mjmd has a saved merchant already and can found the corp pretty much whenever they feel like it.....

edit2: starting to think about offering defpacts to nauf and (especially) superdeath sometime in the near future, to hem in mjmd's options..... i think the most likely way for this game to end in the near future is for them to slam into and roll over one of them and a coalition of the rest of the world being unable to stop it (perhaps due to the ottomans stabbing us in the back at the worst possible time)

does anyone know offhand if we will get the yields from bio farms on the same interturn that we discover the tech or not? eg, should we switch all cities to farms with 1t left to go on bio research, or do we wait until the tech has actually come in?

Didn't they move production back to the end of turn in BtS?

uhhh..... to be honest i have no idea LOLL

curious civplayer seeeeeems to suggest that research is applied to the current project before food is added to each city.... but i don't know if that means that tile yields will be updated if a tech is discovered that changes them or not

I would just worldbuilder it then.

sheesh, every time one of them rolls the turn without playing a double, i assume they DoWed on me and then procrastinate the turn all day...... and now i try to log in and civac is already there smile guess i'll wait a minute, then roll it myself

well, SOMEone's having the same thoughts i am..... but no cows from ginger, which does not exactly inspire confidence in their claims that we can trust them to attack mjmd with us. so i did not accept SD's offer, not yet, as our situation with ginger is still too fragile to get dragged into war with india (and i don't think india's ready to attack yet)

we can see the land oil now, and it looks like almost all of it is in the desert belt:

does anyone have a problem with oil access as a result?? well....

here is one of ginger's oils

and here is the other.....

desperately trying to shave one last turn off the bio ETA. and, to my shock, it looks like it's actually going to happen! or, it /could/ happen, but i think we need to set almost literally every city onto research or wealth, and probably bring a dangerous and abrupt halt to drafting in the meantime as well. only exceptions are aksum and 4 cities that are literally 1t from finishing an infra project. whether that's worth it is anyone's guess

check out my awesome, completely ineffectual caravel...

hit enter and

you, uh, can't really tell from this, but hungary rush and longship spam both popped third-ring borders this turn which will HOPEfully help meaningfully in the culture war..... also, ginger finishing bio works out to help significantly in our research push, such that we can mercifully free a handful of cities from max wealth forever

spotlight on aksum, about to hit the magic size 18 for what should be 4-gold domestic trade routes smile

still drafting at max rate to at least do SOMEthing to deter gingerian aggression.... but it's probably just not going to be that effectual when it's to the tune of just 3 rifles in every north coast city, in the face of 20+ cavs that could be coming at us by boat..... we're doing our best, but even that is probably going to have to stop when we hit bio and our pop points become too precious to waste. which is in 2 turns! bio in 2 turns :O honestly i never thought we'd make it this far

oh and i tested it and it looks like we DO get the bio benefit on the turn we discover the tech (at least in single player) so effectively we are getting it..... next turn!!!!! at which point i will, of course, switch all our cities to their max farm configuration. and actually, since that means coming off some of these plains windmills that are propping up our research rate now, just to be safe i'm going to swap everyone back to wealth for oneee more turn just to give us a lil extra margin for error lol

I'm not sure I agree with the logic that because we increased our food yields, pops are now too precious for us to keep drafting? Shouldn't we be growing them back faster now?
Reply

hmm.... i am not sure i had, like, actual /logic/ behind that statement lmao, but the reasons for my having sub-logical feelings along those lines are roughly as follows: right now i rank the tiles we are working in the following order: town > grass windmill > plains windmill > plains farm. i have been drafting off of plains farms wherever possible, with the two exceptions of the great person cities and the ones i'm growing up to size for the extra trade route yields. i have done SOME drafting off of plains windmills, but that feels like it has kinda dubious ROI - in the best case (7-5 pop), drafting a rifle converts 31 food into 110 hammers for a ~1->3.5 food/hammer conversion ratio, while just working a plains windmill gives us 4 hammers (5 with a forge!) from that same 1 food plus marginal commerce, AND we get a better unit since it gives a 2-promo rifle instead of a 1-promo draftee (uh, by which i mean a 5-promo rifle instead of a 4-promo draftee, thank u tokugawa <3). drafting off grass windmills feels even worse since i think these are strictly better tiles to a plains windmill.....

once we have bio though (so....effectively now), the plains farms will vault above plains hill windmills, and probably even grass hill windmills, on our valuation hierarchy.... since a 3/1/1 plains farm supports working a 1/4/1 plains windmill, i am thinking of them as (almost, but not quite due to the time delay and escalated growth cost) as valuable as a 2/5/2 tile would be, which is absurd. but that means we're really not going to have any tiles anymore where it feels like a strong ROI to draft off them instead of just working them, so it seems like drafting will be an increasingly short-termist move from this point forward, at least until we run out of tiles to work (i DO plan to draft off specialists endlessly when we get there). maybe we do need to still be that short-termist in a few places - the south coast i'm feeling ok about with 7 rifle + 12-ish junk unit stacks in all 3 cities, but the north coast is still dicey as hell if ginger goes for it - but in general i think we should try to at least grow our cities onto max food surplus first wherever possible.... thankfully that shouldn't take too long as we are seriously about to have 7+ food surplus in every single city outside of the desert belt exactly

anyways idk if that makes sense or is valid but it's roughly where my heart is at on this. feel free to correct my semi-delirious reasoning as always!

90 mins until im meeting a friend for lunch. as we know i have a great record as far as rushing turns while still playing accurately is concerned....

nothing too terrible on turn roll this time. mjmd out of GA, ginger starting a nice chill 4t railroad research (after which combustion, electricity, and industrial will remain between them and tanks)

so now we ask: can we max out on food this turn while still finishing bio on time?

this city now has an effective +15 food surplus.....

answer: it is a bit too close for comfort, but apparently yes....

ginger privateer spotted off the coast of india....

uh.... well, hi there, random ginger cavs?? what brings you to our peaceful farming community?

beautiful

and, perfect, here are enough of ginger's galleons to make me feel reasonably confident that they haven't been doing an end-run around us to drop troops off on our northern coast

and here we see a significant stack of ginger cavs on the move...... the "12c" pin marks their location as of last turn.....

india starting to respond in kind with their own naval buildup

anyways, we are something like 10-15 over the threshold for 1t bio on both the beaker and gold side.... so no drafting this turn, and i am going to PRAY that our economy does not change by enough mid-turn to cause us to miss on either side and lose out on our precious extra turn of bio access that i have scrounged so hard to obtain for us....

well, either ginger is doing this "roll turn, play only the first half, then post ominously in their thread for the first time this month" thing specifically to mess with us, or i overlooked something and we are now FUBAR lol no promises to play the whole turn in the latter case, but i'll at least log in and look around

nope, apparently we're ok..... and ginger took SD's defpact smile which i probably will take as well at SOME point, just, you know..... not right now

anyway lemme see that farmworld money shot

YEAHHH there we go

when was the last time we were first in one of the major demographic categories

mans has been in the top division for literally like 5 tournaments and is already sekiwake (yeah, we've reached the point where 4 plains tiles and a few unused desert hills are sufficient to justify a filler city, at least IMO)

note also CTR, a city we bought back from mjmd for 200 gold, is now actually strong enough to draft :O
