In retrospect, settling only 1 (one) town east of capital was pretty weird and stupid.

I'm now whipping to get settlers out to reach like 16+ city count. Very nice new site found to the east.
Only 60 net income. Concept of "low city count, high research, mace/knight rush" kinda forgotten.

Lakefish is pretty nice. And at least we won't be missing out on not having cottaged the land before, it will all be mines and lumbermills.

What tech point would you want to aim for a military buildup? Nationalism to start drafting seems a good place to start looking at.

12 cities now, 4 settlers en route and another about to be whipped.

We're now in 5th place in everything except that same tech lead (on the same techs) from before.
But 3 cities will be founded next turn, and another GA can be triggered soon, once cities recover from the settler-whipping.
Also with have religion+OR civic

A 4 city deficit is not too bad for this stage of the game. The main worry I have about it is that scooter is the one leading with econ traits.

What is the tech plan for the second GA?

For tech, what do we need on defense for the foreseeable future - xbow/longbow?
Offense - no plans until nationalism?
Internal development - ? A wonder maybe?

Longbows are pretty good generic defense when knights have to be moved on ships and can't easily get amphibious as a promotion. Muskets are even better as a versatile attacking and defending unit. But we should also aim to be looking to get astronomy soonish. I imagine someone will be aiming for frigates sooner rather than later.
