Yes, I was suffering quite badly from that cannons just now. I got quite used to the dwarf, by now. Not good for farming or killing, but good support.

Gangplank (Pirate) is more or less considered to be the worst champion in the game. Obviously it's up to you, but I don't recommend using him.
Giving this a try today. Unsuprisingly my Name is TheArchduke.
Edit: Seems straightforward enough if you have played it during WCIII or SC II. Although I doubt I will be online when you NA guys will. Sullla Wrote:Gangplank (Pirate) is more or less considered to be the worst champion in the game. Obviously it's up to you, but I don't recommend using him. Really? I've been doing quite well as Gangplank. All I've been doing is using Parrrrley a lot, buying Avarice Blades and saving up for damage-magnifying items. If you can last-hit with Parrrley (it gives you 4-16 extra gold per kill, depending on level) you'll get much more money than anyone else... I should add that I'm some way away from your level in terms of competence, though.
This game looks very interesting, and Sullla's vids have been great. Although I keep being surprised by his voice -- for some reason I imagined him having a deeper voice.
My current computer is just not up to the task, but the new machine is almost here -- just a few more days. Then I will be giving this a try. Thanks for all for the suggestions, links, and advice.
Alright, so let's look at Gangplank's abilities then:
- His Passive adds some minor poison damage that reduces healing. Useful against one or two champs who rely on regeneration (Mundo comes to mind) and that's about it. - Parrrley applies Gangplank's attack damage at range, with a minor boost in damage. Pretty much every single champion in the game has an ability like this, most of them much better. Parrrley stacks with attack damage, so it will not get stronger from ability power. This is Gangplank's only ranged skill, and it costs too much mana to spam until late in the game. I mean it's OK and all, but other champs have ranged skills that are infinitely superior. The extra gold bonus is basically irrelevant. - Remove Scurvy is a great heal, but it only targets Gangplank himself, and it cannot be cast on allied champs. Plus it stacks with ability power, not attack damage, which puts Gangplank in an uncomfortable position between the usage of Parrrley and his other abilities. Someone like Taric or Kayle are vastly better at healing. - Raise Morale's passive function is pretty weak. 24% attack speed at level 5? You get more than that from Berserker's Greaves, and besides, all the experts agree that attack damage is vastly more important than attack speed. (Think about it, and that should make sense.) In order to get the active function, Gangplank has to kill a minion, making it useless in most teamfights. Umm, not looking good here. - Cannon Barrage is OK, but pretty easy to dodge (Flash and Ghost clear it very quickly) and it has a terrible ability power ratio. There are much better crowd control ultimate than this (Amumu, Fiddlesticks, Nunu, and so on.) So... what does this guy do well, anyway? He's a weak choice for attack damage builds, since only Parrrley benefits from them. Ability power doesn't work well either, as it just increases the benefit of heals and the cannon barrage. Gangplank has basically no support abilities, so that's out. And this guy is definitely NOT a tank character. No offense to Pirate, but he's a pretty useless character. The developers need to rework this guy into something useful. haphazard1, I'll give you the same response I gave sunrise a couple years ago: "Sorry if I'm not more impressive in real life."
Gangplank doesn't do anything well. About the only thing he does well is solo lane because he can deny his opponent creeps by executing them with the "Raise Morale" skill. After the laning phase, he's useless. If he gets super fed, he can melt squishy characters with big critical parley strikes....but can't you say the same for any character with a lot of items?

Interesting, thanks guys.
I still continue to do far better with Gangplank than I do with Ashe, who's been my other champion in my first couple of weeks of play. I can't seem to get Ashe to do enough damage quickly enough; she really only seems to have one useful ability, apart from her ultimate, which is very useful in teamfights but not otherwise. Gangplank I have no such problems with, especially as Parrrley criticals in the same way that a ranged melee attack does. So a volley of Parrrley plus a melee attack can deal upwards of 1000 damage on its own towards the end of a game, as soon as you can afford Infinity Edge. I also find the extra gold from Parrley to be *amazing* -- it can increase gold from minions by 30-40% as soon as it has a couple of levels, and you'll want to level Parrrley early anyway, because it magnifies the damage from it. It builds the snowball that much sooner (although the number of people playing Gangplank that ignore this is extraordinary). Raise Morale I've found to be quite useful in team fights, which often take place in the vicinity of a fallen tower where there are minions. Cannon Barrage is too weak to be enormously effective, I agree, and it's absolutely nothing on Fiddlesticks' ultimate, which is *amazing*. But it's a very valuable weapon to be used tactically -- usually just behind the enemy to trap them. It can also be used map-wide, so a tower that's under attack by a single champion, with no-one in the vicinity, can be saved by it. As for builds, I've gone attack damage and crit chance all the way. That's my defence of the pirate, anyway -- could anyone suggest a similar, better character for me to try? Preferably one that's cheap and/or free next week |
