I think this game has a much greater emphasis on peace than war. Although the combat model has been redone, a lot of variables that lead to war, such as border disputes and religion, have been cut. And, there have been added mechanics such as limited resources and the hard unit support limit.
However, I think the previews have shown some of the improved aspects of Civ 5, so I'm trying to stay optimistic.

The game might play out very well, we all don't really know. Quite a few of us were also not that happy with changes in Civ4. Who knows what happens.
I'd say, let's try it out first

Another live gameplay event tonight 4pm PT, by GameSpot this time. I heard their "live" shows are pre-recorded though, so I doubt you can interact with the players as well as in the Firaxis one.

ThERat, I definitely plan on trying the game. My pre-order went in a long time ago, so Firaxis/2K already have my money.
I would be delighted to find that my worries have no basis in fact, once the game is (finally!) in our hands. I hope Civ V is a fantastic game, and the Civ community and franchise are invigorated for years to come.
But I do feel there are many legitimate concerns about the decisions and direction of the design team. Unlike the many fanboy boosters you can find spamming threads at sites like Civ Fanatics, I am not ready to declare Civ V the best game in the franchise, in fact the best game in all of human history, before I have even had a chance to play it.

I give it a 20% chance of being awful and 80% of being a misinformed reviewer.

Yikes! That's a major setback. Possibly even a crippling one for the MP community, given that Ancient 5 vs 5 was the default for most ladder stuff. So games like Pitboss #2 wouldn't even be possible in Civ5 (?)
Perhaps I am being overly critical in my hardcore Civness, but these "professional" reviews are basically worthless. If you read between the lines of the Destructoid review:
- The reviewer never builds more than 3-5 cities.
- The reviewer can't seem to finish the tech tree before 2050AD.
- The reviewer automates all his workers.
And so on. Would it be that tough to get someone who doesn't suck at the Civ series to write the review?!? I mean, it's not like these are obscure games or something. I would trust anyone on our forums to write something more interesting and insightful than that "95%" fluff piece that praises every single decision the developers made.
I don't want to hate on this game. But I do want to hear from someone who's not getting their salary paid by Take-Two's marketing department. Sadly, "professional" gaming reviews today cannot be trusted.

The problem is that no one on this forum will give a review until they've played the game for a few months . First impressions, you'll be getting Tuesday!
