I'll get Civ 5 tomorrow, and will then organize another non-variant SG for those who want to join. It'll probably a game on King with the goal of winning a tech victory, so we get to see as much of the game as possible. Discounting Sirian and Sullla's epic RB1, the first open RB succession game for Civ4 was just a simple game played on Noble with the goal of "Just Win." I had enough sign ups to organize 3 separate games. It was pretty fun, albeit a lot of as I look back at it.

Spoiler warning there, Speaker! (Not the picture, but the reference.) Other players in PBEM4 shouldn't know about a certain event, especially since the game is no-talk.

I can not understand why they would change this from Civ 4

I'll watch with interest, partly because I do not currently own the game.
I am also sad that it seems so much harder to take pictures.

I agree Atlas...the guide itself was excellent, but it's still insane we have to jump through hoops here. I 2nd Irfanview for simple batch conversions though.

Allow me to be the first to call dibs.
My only concern, having gone to a tech victory on King, is that it is really, really easy to just grab a core of cities, defend them, make some city-state allies for luxes you need, and tech like mad. The AI will not attack you unless you have an aggressive personality AI around or you're in really close quarters. I had cardboard cutouts for an army and the AI was actually mentioning it in conversation and still would not attack me, to the point where I was considering declaring on someone and not building units or attacking them to make it harder on myself. I entered the modern age when some people were still in Medieval and nobody was in Industrial.
So if I may, I'd like to offer the following suggestions:
1) Overload the map. In the Advanced Setup screen, there's a button marked Add AI. Press that a few times for whatever map size you like. Make the landgrab hard to achieve without going to war. If we play on a Standard map, I'd recommend going up from seven to at least eleven AI. Let's make things interesting.
2) Play on an Archipelago. If the goal is to see the game, then we certainly can't let it go by without the sea. Some good old Sirian Doctrine may be called for. It also means that we'll have to prioritize a lower-value tech in Optics so that our units can move across the water. This serves to handicap us a bit too, because then our cities won't get the bonus for being railroaded to the capital. My only concern is that, not having played on Archipelago, I don't know to what extent the AI is good at landgrab when the sea is involved.
I'd be happy to join this one if there's still room. Civ V won't be available to me for a few more hours, and I don't really have too much input on map settings at this point, so whatever you guys think works best is fine with me.

Maybe one of the SG's should be played with the explicit goal of not winning until most of the tech tree has been explored. Gives more exposure to the new units / techs / etc. and would be a deviation from what sounds like the current norm of people winning by the middle ages.
