Greetings old men, you all seek the spell of mastery. And you've found it! This forum aims to be the new Master of Magic community, gathering the rag tag group of homeless MoM fans from all over the internets to jointly celebrate their nerdly passion for one of the most enthralling strategy games of all time.
Please leave a small message in this thread to let us know who you are and how MoM changed your life forevermore. Tell us about how you stood by MoM through thick and thin, angry spouses, jealous girlfriends, failing grades and a receding economy or hairline. Well met!

Well.. I'm a fairly big fan of the Fall From Heaven fantasy mod for Civ IV. I know that a big inspiration for that game was Master of Magic. So I'm interested sure. Never played it though. What's the game like?

Buggy. Fun. Hilariously unbalanced.
The AI is next to nonexistent, but for this game the whole fun comes from exploration, huge collection of powerfull spells and godlike heroes. It has quite good terrain scripts, unique (for the time) concept of alternate world to play with and tactical battles on square grid. No micromanagement worth speaking about anywhere.
It's not for people who enjoy challenge of beating good AI, it's for people who like to explore a fantasy-themed sandbox and break it with ridiculous spells now and then. Give it a go, it's like 5USD on GoG.com right now.

I loved taking those Halflings on Myrror (the parallel world linked to Arcanus via Towers of Wizardry - see Heroes of Might and Magic), and have those ridiculously overpowered Slingers equipped with Adamantium weapons.
I usually took a minumum of Magic Books, since you could get them from Nodes so easily. That allowed me to take the maximum of traits.
I'll see if I can recall some more anecdotes...

I'm 30 years old and live in Denmark. I recently got married to a wonderful woman from Texas who's moved here to live with me, so gaming has taken a bit of a back seat lately (she just informed me that she begs to differ).
It was a magical time when Master of Magic came out, I was already an avid fan of Master of Orion and MoM captivated me instantly. More and more powerful heroes coming knocking as you got famous was super exciting, discovering mithril (and later adamantium!) weapons almost felt like cheating and there were so many spells to explore. First time Deth Stryke came offering his services I almost jumped in my chair, I guess I hadn't used Summon Champion up until that point.
MoM lasted me for a good many years, but I started realizing how horribly unbalanced it was and found myself winning with the same tactics over and over. Eventually it started collecting dust and I moved on to other games, as well as somewhat more useful things to do with my time I did play a game from time to time and kept tabs on various MoM sites, especially Jarvinen's excellent site which lasted for a long time.
A little over a year ago I learned of the possibility to mod Master of Magic. That got my creative juices flowing, and when I found the Dragon Sword site I decided to toss myself into helping build it up. That turned out really well, because of kyrub's work on the Insecticide patch in particular, and the forum got a large following and decent activity. It has been discontinued by its owner, and I'm hoping to rebuild something similar (and better!) over here.

Hey Catwalk,
Nice to see you again. Was wondering what happened to the Dragonsword forums and it's too bad that it had to go down. But I wouldn't mind having a subforum on Realms Beyond as it'll mean I can come here for both my MOO and MOM needs!
Both games have taken a back seat for now in my life, but I'm sure when the itch reappears - which it always does - that I'll pull it out again and spend more time than I should on them
Cheers,
SDragon

Oh wow. Thoughts of this game popped into my only a few days ago. I must have been having a premonition!
I fondly remember Master of Magic. One play session where I sat at it for 16 hours straight. The discovery of how to build roads across the sea. The time when I temporarily stationed an army of 6 Sky Drakes in one of my weakest frontier towns for one turn, only to be attacked by a single unit of orc engineers.
Yes please. If a Master of Magic discussion comes here, I'll be in.

Hi
I'm an eurasian badger ( meles meles) and live in Poland. Master of Magic is still one of best fantasy strategy games. I love experimenting and trying new things, and MoM is a wonderful game for a creative player. It's not so much about beating the AI for me, but about doing so with some ridiculous strategies or restrictions. For example, on my ToDo list there's a game I have to win with hordes of skeletons. (Why skeletons ? Decent stats, and unlike normal units, you are not limited to 1 skeleton/turn). Or use wand of black sleep (2 charges, -2 spell save) with ghouls for very creepy but very good results. Or make Basilisk work and be feared with the simple use of Wall of Stone. Remember:
Those who do not understand Master of Magic are condemned to reinvent it -- badly.
I'm also interested in brainstorming about and playtesting any Master of Magic mods. I have much more ambitious ideas than mere rebalancing, but it will do. And I can't disassemble to save my life.

Hey, wow I'm so glad we've got a new fresh start here Hopefully rest of the dragonsword community find their way here. For those who do not know, I'm 22 years old and live in Finland, and I'm a huge fan of Master of Magic, which is one of the first games I've played. Couldn't even read English when I got my hands to this :D Ya I'd to learn everything by trial & error and by watching my brother playing it :D But I had all the time :P Now I'm looking forward to test kyrub's balance project and Catnip mod too.

You see, Catwalk's been working on a Catnip mod, which aims to create a whole new gaming experience. He and his team made a very good progress when dragonsword.com was still up, but I do not know the current status.
EDIT: my sincere apologies to kyrub for misspelling his name as karyb
