Fortune favors the bold.
Blake, a fine report here.
I am not posting mine since I did not complete the game just like you. In fact your progress sounds so similar to mine, though I wasn't ever that far behind in techs to the barbs.
I was wondering if anyone would win this thing, nice job! I wish you or ThERat had endured countless hours managing modern warfare for my viewing pleasure, but I understand cutting it short.

i played the game and got very similar results to yourself.
i did raise several barb cities with prets including the big one with the silks early. but i made an absolout bline for iron and prets founding my second city on the iron. also late in the game i bouced quin of my island but could not get the heart up to keep going. i went the othe way from you and rpoduced a massive navy and stoppe jim landing though but i think this was sub optimal to me if i had to take the game to him unchallenged landing i suppose but not enough land units. i ddid use the SDI (sirrians one) for the first time though enjoyed that. Sirian Wrote:Damned fine show, all in all. Spain on a Lake, teehee. It never even occured to me to regret not founding on the Iron. With my one-track mind I didn't hook up the copper, when I play Rome, Axemen don't even exist. So all I had to defend the city was archers - and archers in a flatland city is a risky thing. On the other hand, archers in a city on a hill is a secure thing, and from experience I know that barbs don't molest workers while they're still working - they only care about cities and completed terrain improvements. So I knew I'd be able to found the city and take my time hooking up the iron and then whip out a large number of Praets with the barbs having no way to stop me. On the other hand I knew the barb axemen COULD raze a flatland city, if a big enough stack came in (4+ barbs and some luck can take out 3 archers...). While founding on the Iron would've hooked it up quicker I never was in a hurry to get things done. Slow and Steady wins the race. Also once I did have Praets the Barbbarians had no chance of actually pushing me back... the only question was how much population I had to sacrifice to keep the barbs at bay... I didn't comprimise on city locations - only Rome was founded on a resource, as such my cities were real powerhouses, able to really crank out military. I was always intending to take the fight to the Barbarians anyway so I wasn't too defensively minded.
Nice win. I was impressed you managed to outproduce the AI, that was a distinct problem against Qin in my game.
Great game and a very insightful report. The Random Trivia is great! Here I thought Approval Rate and Life Expectancy were simply informative demographics with no real game play value. In future games Iâll keep a closer eye on these values to determine my play effectiveness. I always thought higher values were better.
