I must say that I did not give the AI enough credit on this one. It kept surprising me. Like my game, my report ends a bit abruptly.
Epic 9: Compromise's Report

Interesting game! Looks like though you fell behind in tech and underestimated the AI, you managed to catch up and win. Good job!
Hi,
interesting game! I think your game was the most AW-ish of all I've read so far, with exciting battles and scary counterattacks by the AIs. If you give the AIs time to develop, it looks like they actually get some things done... cool. Compromise Wrote:I really should have discovered fishing a lot earlier and sent a few workboats out to meet the neighbors and get the other-civs-know-it-already tech rate bonus.I thought you get the research bonus even if you have not met the other civs. Or had they changed this in one of the last patches? Apart from that, I'm not sure how far your workboats would have come in an Always War game. -Kylearan

Kylearan Wrote:Apart from that, I'm not sure how far your workboats would have come in an Always War game. Further than they would have in a non-always war game, since there would be no need for writing to pass enemy borders. The AI never seems to build many galleys early. I'm willing to bet that, if one had built workboats asap, one would have been able to circumnavigate with them before they got sunk by galleys. Assuming a bit of luck with the route, naturally.
I don't think it was actually possible to reach Qin/Cyrus continent without either optics or pushing cultural borders over ocean.
Uberfish is right: you needed some border pops on one of the eastern Japanese cities to get access across the ocean to the Qin/Cyrus continent. It seems like it's usually that way on snaky continents, but not on small islands archipelagos. But Gris is definitely right: at least you don't have to wait for Writing to pass those borders.
As for the research bonus, I've been assuming you need to meet the other civs to get it. I looked a little at the strategy articles at civfanatics and found this thread which seems to support that, though it may have changed with later patches. And yes, I did get a sense of the AW feel. I increased my appreciation for espionage and learned how the AI prepares for overseas invasions. (It builds up a galley/galleon group with escorts and slowly fills the ships with troops until it's ready to go. That helped me know an attack was imminent recently in SGOTM2.) I'm sure the naval version of AW is different than the land version because you can often intercept them. (At least if you're vigilant enough.) Nothing like giving the AI a headstart by going for 4 largely useless AW techs (Mysticism, Polytheism, Masonry, Monotheism) in the very early going. That'll add a bit of spice to anybody's Always War experience. But I for one won't be going down that path again, at least not in an epic.
I found your pillaging interesting (LK did this too), I have never done this to cottages, but maybe I should consider it more in the future.

My take on pillaging is that if you are planning to capture the city, don't pillage your future holdings. If you are just trying to slow down the AI, pillage away!
I have finally decided to put down some cash and register a website. It is www.ruffhi.com. Now I remain free to move the hosting options without having to change the name of the site.

The pillaging was sort of a desperation move. Ghandi seemed to be getting out of control tech-wise, but I didn't think I had nearly the troops to take any and hold any cities on his starting continent. I probably made a little bit of cash from the pillaging, but I think it succeeded in slowing him down long-term. While he reimproved all his resources, I don't think he ever rebuilt a single cottage on that continent, even when I wasn't around to pester him. 8)
